Delighted to publish the Scottish Renewables 2024 General Election Manifesto today. Our priorities across investment, infrastructure and innovation offer tangible steps the next UK Government can take to unlock the enormous potential for sustainable economic growth from Scotland’s renewable energy industry. Key priorities include: 🔋 Modernise the Contracts for Difference scheme to enable the stable deployment of Scotland’s renewable energy pipeline. 🏗️ Prioritise the delivery of strategic infrastructure for net-zero, including upgrades to our ports and new transmission infrastructure. 📈 Adopt an evolutionary, not revolutionary, approach to market reform to provide the policy certainty needed to incentivise investment. ✅ Deliver clearer coordination for net-zero delivery across the UK to scale-up supply chains, skills and green growth. Scottish Renewables have today also released fresh polling revealing most people in the North East of Scotland — the energy capital of Europe — believe renewable energy is the most important sector for their economic future. Good to see the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee highlight the importance of front-loading milestones to sort out the grid connection delays in their report on sustainable electrification of the UK economy published today. The report notes evidence from Low Carbon suggesting that bringing the milestones forward and ‘front-loading’ them would alleviate this problem and allow faster rollout of energy generation. Looking forward, the Committee recommends that the government and Ofgem actively monitor and streamline initiatives designed to deliver grid connections faster. It also recommends that Ofgem review its milestone queue reforms, with a focus on advancing demonstrably ready projects to the front of the queue. Once the dust has settled after the election it is important that the next government and the regulator move quickly to continue delivering these reforms so we can get more clean energy on the system. UK General Election 2024: EIA sets out its key green policies for the next Government As UK political parties hit the campaign trail in earnest for the 4 July General Election, EIA today released its own manifesto of key policy recommendations. The 16-point action plan 'Our Planet, Our Problem' is released against the backdrop of the mounting triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. EIA marks its 40th anniversary this year since it began investigating, exposing and campaigning against environmental crime and abuse and the charity believes the next UK Government has a key role to play as a part of international efforts to secure a viable future. Important report from Nesta on how to increase low carbon heating in the UK. Two main top line recommendations: 1. Clarity for households and businesses on direction of travel including ending confusion on hydrogen and a deadline for end of fossil fuel use for home heating. 2. Make low carbon heating the go to option for boiler replacement by rebalancing energy bills, support with installation costs (subsidies and zero interest loans) and increasing consumer confidence by improving installation and providing consumer protection.

Renewables transition doesn’t end with replacing generation assets. Deploying infrastructure that facilitates this switch is equally vital. In a UK first Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners portfolio financed 5 Synchronous condensers in Wales and Scotland. The long-dated debt was arranged by NatWest, Siemens Financial Services and NORD/LB. All 5 assets are set to be fully operational by the end of this year and will help facilitate the admittance of intermittent renewables generation into the national grid. Reflecting on a day of great panel sessions and fruitful discussions at last week's POLITICO Europe Energy and Climate UK Summit, which focused on the UK's 2050 net-zero roadmap.   Overall, there's a huge amount of enthusiasm and drive within the energy sector at the moment - albeit tempered by a healthy realism about what's needed to deliver net-zero, and in particular the ambitious targets set by the Conservative and Labour parties for decarbonising the grid, respectively.   There were important contributions and policy discussions on:   - The need to find a balance between net-zero targets that are ambitious enough to spur the industry into action - but that are also achievable. - The implications of the US Inflation Reduction Act and the need for a domestic industrial strategy that will help the UK reclaim its status as one of the best places to invest in clean energy. - How to ensure the UK has the skills base to deliver the green transition. - How to secure genuine buy-in from communities living near new infrastructure, above and beyond just sharing in the economic benefits.   ...and much more besides.   It's clear that whichever party wins the next general election is going to have a huge to-do list, if we are to remain on track for net-zero. But it goes without saying that it will be supported by an energy sector full of commitment and drive for the task ahead.

Companies focusing too heavily on climate transition may not recognise the synergies and trade-offs linked to adaptation, explains Kit England. This could store up trouble for the future. Think of an energy company looking to site a green hydrogen facility as part of its transition plan. The productivity of this asset relies on access to water, the essential ingredient for electrolysis. If the company does not factor in future climate-related water stresses at the chosen location, what should be a profitable green energy business may turn out to be a dud a few years down the line - imperilling the company’s decarbonisation. With Ed Miliband firmly behind the desk at DESNZ, the energy industry will be eagerly waiting for him to provide more detail of some policies in Labour's manifesto - particularly what he intends for Great British Energy.    Whether it's an investment vehicle or something more involved, there's one mission he should build into the body from the start. That's acting as an educator and an advocate for the energy transition.   Our NSIP Community Sentiment Research, conducted earlier in the year, shows that: 📣 More than 7 in 10 support renewables in their area ❓ BUT nearly 6 in 10 also say that they don't know about renewables 🚫 It's that knowledge gap that opens the way for opponents of development to convert passive support into active opposition We're seeing that particularly in attitudes towards new transmission infrastructure. Only 35% said they supported this in their area - partly because many people don't make the link between needing new renewables and needing to get the electricity to where it's needed.   Developers have had a hard time making the case themselves. Communities, naturally, tend to point out that they have a financial stake in the matter.   That's where Great British Energy could and should come in - leading the charge in helping communities understand how the 'local pain' they're facing is genuinely part of a much bigger picture, with similar work taking place across the country.
