Interviewer speaking very loudly: "We've had people who started in this Admin role and have then moved on to bigger and better things!!! Me and my brilliant co-worker: (Observers, who couldn't but help hear as this very LOUD interview was being held in an open plan area at Unity Place MK: "Wow, did he just say that?" There are several threads to unpick here: 🪡 Why would you interview in a place where there were lots of folks working when there are lots of spaces within the location that would have been far more private? 🪡 Why would the interviewer assume that the candidate wouldn't be satisfied with the role that she was interviewing for, hence why she was there in the first place? Huge generalisations made without attempting to explore or find out about the candidate's motivations. 🪡 I wonder how the candidate felt during this experience. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Surely we can do better, can't we? #candidateexperience #techrecruiter #femalefounder

I find when building a top 1% company culture, it's crucial to go beyond the surface and truly connect with your team. For me, it's about instilling loyalty and a strong ethos among my staff. They need to feel there's room for growth, not just professionally but personally too. In my experience, it's vital that my team knows I'm genuinely interested in their goals, not just the bottom line. When they see that I'm invested in their success, it fosters a sense of trust and unity. I've noticed that when my team can visualize their own success within our office, it fuels their motivation and commitment. Beyond the daily grind, I've found immense value in teaching life and mindset skills. It's not just about the work we do; it's about empowering my team to level up in all aspects of their lives. And when we focus on their holistic growth, we create a culture that breeds success organically. People aren't perfect, so why do we feel CV's have to be? A manager responded to a profile I sent through... "There is a bit of movement in the last few years and I have concerns about their tenure" Now this is completely valid, and in this case they asked me for context. But not all scenarios will get that chance, so don't look for "perfect" in CV's. In this case, they went on mat leave, the company restructured during COVID many others and they contracted ever since to support their 2 kids. I usually try to give a blank slate during that 2020-2022 period. After 100's of hires in the last few years, I’ve learnt that if you want to build the right team, the perfect hire doesn't exist. Resumes don’t perform jobs. People do. Hire people, not resumes.

How much should I charge as an interim? So you’ve just made the plunge to take an interim contract but have no idea what to charge. Here are a few simple rules to follow: 1️⃣ Salary / 200 Take your salary and divide it by 200 👉 £50k = £250 per day 👉 £80k = £400 per day 👉 £120k = £600 per day Rates have skyrocketed recently due to market conditions and IR35 changes Rule of thumb - add £100 to this number - - - 2️⃣ Know the accepted market rate 👉 Accounts Assistant - £200 per day 👉 Management Accountant - £400 - £500 per day 👉 Group Accountant - £500 - 800 per day 👉 Financial Controller - £500 - 700 per day 👉 Finance Director - £600 - £1,200 per day Some of these have big ranges and will be affected by 👉 Experience 👉 Tenure as an interim 👉 Company size 👉 Company budget - - - 3️⃣ What motivates you? Interims are renownedly expensive because 👉 They are parachuted in as experts to get you out of a sticky situation - URGENT DEMAND 👉 Capable of much more than you need for the job - OVERQUALIFIED 👉 They don’t receive private medical or holiday days - LACK OF BENEFITS Don't undersell your skillset but equally don't demand the top of your banding for every assignment Being open minded when looking at all of the factors will stand you in good stead - scope of work, length of assignment, location, flexible working & money!

"No agencies please. We've got this." Meanwhile... (From Raconteur citing research by Indeed) "Many employers aren’t responding to job applications, leaving applicants dispirited and knocking their confidence. That’s according to a survey of 1,000 employees and an equal number of employers by job-listings website Indeed. With 55% of job-hunters never hearing back about their applications, many Brits are giving up on finding a suitable role. Accordingly, 27% of respondents say they lowered their standards and started applying for roles that they knew were not right for them. All these frustrations mean that only 9% of job-seekers feel empowered to continue looking for the right role. The vast majority report negative feelings, including demoralisation and burnout, over the often protracted process. Nearly a quarter of job seekers say their last search took six months or longer."

What does every client actually want? After 12 years of recruitment I still always ask: ”What is the most important aspect of a partnership?” Last week a client listed 4: - Taking time to understand their culture - ⁠Become an extended arm to the studio - Sending quality over quantity CVs - A relationship based on trust We both wanted the same outcome. Open and honest communication whilst providing a great candidate experience. Relationships are EVERYTHING. And you MUST do everything to nurture them. ATTN: Agency Recruiters and BD Professionals in the Staffing Industry; This is the reason our industry has gotten such a bad rep. Hiring Managers post a job and get bombarded by every one and their mother! The worst is 95% of those calls bring no value other than begging them to be able to submit your talent pool to their opening (with the caveat that whole Agency is going to endlessly call you until you quit that job). Hiring Managers; The game has changed!! Some of the best TA/Headhunters/Recruiters I know have started their own shop. Not because they were tired for working for the man, but because they saw how saturated and bad some of these huge agencies have gotten with customer service. The best people to partner with when it comes to staffing bring value when performing cold outreach. They will always bring a Most Placeable Candidate to the table. They will always be able to tell you current market conditions and candidate pricing. Doers not beggars. Long story short; the game has completely changed because Clients looking for staffing help rather struggle themselves the get bombarded by agency recruiters. My recommendation for TA Leaders is to find those Solopreneurs or Fraction Headhunters. Most of these people specialize in a certain skillset so I would find 5 different ones and keep them on deck for whenever you need them!

𝐑𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧... It feels like there’s a lot of rejection going around at the moment, and it can really get us down if we let it. Recruiters face a lot of rejection on the daily, so I feel like I have some strong personal experience with this 😂 Early in my career, rejection got me down. To be perfectly honest, when we first started Emerson Black Consulting, rejection got me down a bit too – as a founder of the company, it felt more personal. BUT, it wasn’t. The people rejecting “me” aren’t rejecting me at all. They're rejecting my offering. Maybe they don’t have a need at that time, maybe they got a better price elsewhere. It wasn’t about me. We can’t control the outcomes of situations, only our perception and reaction. What if we reframed rejection as redirection? We’re being redirected to something better that’s just around the corner. The people who don’t want to work with me are freeing me up for the people who do, clients more aligned with the way I like to work. This choice to believe that a better outcome is on its way has carried me through many tough weeks. Maybe its delusion. But it hasn’t failed me yet! Positive mindset + directed effort = desirable results. Every time.

I asked DALL-E by Open AI to create this... "Can you create me an image of a recruitment agency owner who specialises in the media industry in the UK who uses linkedin for lead generation and who is excited about the fact its Friday and nearly the weekend" I literally am sat here waiting for a phone call with a candidate so I thought I'd play around with DALL-E inspired by Tom Sweeney's Canne Lions photo (go check his out) and I can't work out if I'm impressed by this or not... Naturally my prompt is rubbish (and we all know that the key to AI is in the prompt) but for so little information I think it's done an okay job. I think what's scary but also incredibly exciting is where AI will take the creative industries? I've gone from being terrified that it will take my job (and those of the talent I represent) to actually really excited by what the future holds with it. If it can create this in a split second with a terrible prompt, just imagine where we will be in a year? ‘We don’t get enough candidates’ 🤝 ‘The candidates we get are good enough’ Two of the most common things we hear as #talentacquisition or #recruitment people. I did when I joined Cineworld Cinemas Ltd & Picturehouse. So, how did I address these issues? Overhauled the job adverts and job descriptions. If you’re in this situation is more than likely your JDs and Ads aren’t pulling their weight... But what should you look out for? 📍 They probably start with waffle about your business.  📍 They don’t use bottom-up language. You need to get on the reader's level by addressing them. Humanise it and help them relate.  📍 Culture. Environment. Be explicit and paint a picture of what to expect.  📍 Use engaging language that reflects your company culture & employer brand.  📍 Give them all the details they need (eg. Salary, flexibility, benefits). Use them to attract and engage. Don’t use it to blow smoke up your own arse and shove a barrage of useless information down the readers throat about the crappy awards your company paid for.    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   What have the results been in my first 8 weeks at Cineworld & Picturehouse? 👉 6x number of applications  👉 2x hireable candidates at final interviews for each vacancy  👉 Reduced ‘Time to Hire’ to below 26 days  👉 100% first time offer acceptation rate  👉 Reduced ‘Cost Per Hire’ by 85% A simple change has been a drastic improvement for the business. It doesn’t solve everything and they're a constant work in progress but, it’s been a really effective way to have an impact quickly. My example is attached for some inspo, so use, abuse and critique.
