Just like laptops and smart devices, VR and XR devices do very little without software. Software applications give hardware a purpose in a particular sector for a particular use-case. Combined we call this a 'solution'. Understanding the market, industry or sector, for instance entertainment, automotive, healthcare, construction etc is critical as the needs and challenges of each can be very different. Understanding the use-cases, for instance, training, marketing, design is also important as the role that VR is playing for the user can completely change, even within the same sector, depending on who will be using the application and the outcome they need. Understanding these requirements will help you to chose the right development tools.

You're thinking of pursuing a career in virtual reality. What are the most important trends to watch out for?
There are a lot of VR devices available and it helps to understand the differences. There are purely PC driven headsets which are popular with experienced gamers and serious business visualisation users. These are usually connected to a computer via a data cable. Then there are Mobile VR headsets that do not need to be connected to a computer and have everything they need built in. These are more portable and quicker to set up. Typically these can also be connected to a computer to run more processor intensive applications as well. Newer headsets often called MR, XR or spatial devices use cameras on the front to enable users to see their real environment overlaid with virtual content using hand, eye and/or controller interaction.
