Interesting article on how retailers have increased prices on everyday consumer goods in the last 2-3 years. Although we've seen salaries increase significantly with inflationary pressure (c. 10-30%, depending on industry sector), has household income kept up with broad reaching retail price increases? Could the Fed have put more measures into place alongside hiking interest rates? With consumer spending slowing down and the April jobs report down to 175,000, we might be finally starting to see a softening of the labor market, boosting hopes of interest rate cuts in late summer through to the end of 2024. https://lnkd.in/eW9Q9MzB

I don’t do politics - but I’d love to see this. Can someone pledge to grow exports? To take the UK back into the global stage? We have so many skills the rest of the world could access. I sat with Dan Power and talked about a business at CCG that does ESOL quals. What could they do with more services to deploy that globally? Our defence businesses could do so much more globally (less arms for me; more defence) in such an unstable geo political situation. I’d happily push our international division further afield if the government made a pledge to help businesses get further overseas (current setup is a bit wishy washy) I don’t mind paying tax, as a business we have no tax avoidance structures in place, I’d love to see it invested into things that would: Improve the UK overall employment culture. Grow the GDP which increases tax revenues and in turn gives people more money to spend. Invest into our exportable industries, which is almost everything we do. I’m not red, blue, yellow or green - I’m pro worker and pro growth. UK Growth but not as expense of happiness party? Sign me up. Sustainable businesses are thriving 🌱 One of these inspirational businesses is the sustainable beverage business, Belu.   Belu is a social enterprise that aims to change how the world sees water, set up by Natalie Campbell MBE and Charlotte Harrington. There are two main components to the business: bottled water, sold through wholesalers to the hospitality sector, and the installation, maintenance and lease of filtered hot and cold water taps for both hospitality and workplaces. Many businesses say they would struggle to make sustainability central to their decision-making process, but Belu does so exceptionally. In a recent interview in the Growth Index, co-founder, Charlotte says: "It’s a privilege to lead a business that genuinely can live its purpose. "At the moment, the demon for bottled water is plastic, but if you look at the data, unless you’re refilling, then a recycled plastic bottle [of the kind Belu uses] is much less carbon intensive than cartons, cans or glass.  "There’s so much greenwashing. We’re aiming for a zero-carbon future. We don’t know how we’re going to get there yet, but we’re doing everything we can to figure it out." The ambition and sheer determination for Belu to do better for our planet is inspirational. And it's paying off. Belu turned over £8.9m in 2023, and grew at a CAGR of 78% over Growth Index’s reporting period. They're also putting their money where their mouth is and gifting their profits to Water Aid until 2030. #growth #sustainability #environment #water

Placements made by recruitment agencies often fall into two categories: permanent placements and temporary/contract placements. Permanent placements are where an agency places a candidate to work directly for the client and charges an introductory fee. Temporary/contract placements are where an agency places a candidate on a short-term basis with a client and during that time will pay the candidate and take a fee per hour/day worked. Temporary/contract placements will often require the agency to pay the candidate before the client makes payment, which means the agency will have to fund the placement for a period of time. While some agencies may have the required cash flow in their account to plug the funding gap, others will need to source external funding to pay the candidate, and there are many solutions on offer to the recruitment market. Invoice finance solutions are secured against the clients’ creditworthiness, the contracts that the agency and client are engaged with, and the authorised timesheet confirming the work has been completed. Businesses bet on growth... 💪 Business are planning on growth after the private sector showed its "strongest outturn" in nearly two years according to the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) composite growth indicator. 👏 “That expectations for growth remain positive should give further reassurance that things are heading in the right direction, alongside our survey data showing hiring intentions are holding up,” said Alpesh Paleja, lead economist at the CBI. Big news in the beverage sector: Britvic remains steadfast, rebuffing a hefty £3.1bn Carlsberg bid. Despite the tempting offer, the British soft drinks company stands firm, holding out for a value reflecting its true potential. In the world of mergers and acquisitions, few moves are as intriguing as this. Just weeks ago, on June 11th, Carlsberg laid its second proposal on Britvic's table—1,250 pence a share—to which Britvic's board responded with a resolute "no." This followed an initial snubbed offer on June 6th, with the takeover saga turning as fizzy as the drinks in question. Britvic's stance? The bid "significantly undervalues" their worth and future prospects. They're banking on their current strategies and market position to yield greater fruit in the long run, echoing confidence to shareholders. Though they have pledged to consider future proposals in good faith, the message is loud and clear: Britvic sees a sparkling future that's worth more than the proposed billions. Carlsberg, for its part, portrays the bid as a full, attractive cash valuation for shareholders—an opportunity for them to cash out at what Carlsberg views as an 'attractive valuation'. Chicken Shop CEO – we’re aiming for 70 UK sites and thinking about Europe: Chicken Shop chief executive John Nelson has said the business is aiming for 70 UK sites long-term and thinking about European expansion. The Sir Charles Dunstone-backed business, which was previously known as Chik’n, currently has six locations spread across London. Speaking at the launch of Just Eat’s report on its contribution to the UK economy, Nelson outlined a longer-term target for Chicken Shop, which last year received a further £8.275m investment from Dunstone, its main shareholder. “We have plans to do four more [stores] this year and ten next year, and longer-term, we’ll be looking at 70 in the UK and thinking about going into Europe,” Nelson said. “60% of our volume comes from dine-in and 40% from delivery, so they are both super important channels for us, but delivery is part of our landscape now and is only going to get bigger. A lot of businesses would have folded during covid without delivery, and I would probably lose 40% of my team without it. Ten years ago, my parents wouldn’t have a clue about it (ordering for delivery online) but now even they can order! We have plans to expand in the north, and as we do, Just Eat will become more important as it has more of a presence in the north.” Founded in 2015 by Carl Clarke and David Wolanski who met at Latitude Festival in 2010, the business rebranded in 2022 after entering into a partnership with Soho House Group. In October last year, Propel revealed that Chicken Shop was looking to grow off the back of a strong trading performance and further backing from Dunstone, who also backs Five Guys here. The £8.275m loan was a second from Dunstone, who previously loaned the business £3.25m. Last month, Nelson told Propel that Chicken Shop continued to benefit from strong trading momentum as consumers increasingly look to trade up to premium chicken offers. It came as the company strengthened its management team with the hires of a head of acquisitions and a head of sales and marketing. Chris Pashley, formerly of McDonald’s and Starbucks, joins as head of acquisitions, while David Souter joins as its new head of sales and marketing.

Valuable #recruitment market update from APSCo and James C. at Vacancysoft this morning. At 1st Executive Ltd we've seen many of our UK clients focus on expanding their geographic footprint through the use of "medium cost locations" over recent years, in order to help attract and retain a more diverse workforce, however the latest YTD stats suggest the potential of a return to #london centric hiring strategies. Whilst the dial has only moved marginally with 41% of total vacancies YTD in London (vs 38% in 2023), it could be the sign of things to come. I thought it interesting to note that whilst industry specific trends often impact the findings, the Financial & Professional services market as a whole has contracted slightly in terms of total vacancy volumes YTD (albeit this contradicts the significant growth that we've experienced in #procurement and #suppliermanagement hiring YTD vs 2023 in these markets!).
