Too much manual labor For many small companies renting still involves calling, scheduling, bookkeeping, and transport management between many people. One transaction requires work from the receptionist, bookkeeper, and transport manager not to mention the renting client. 2. Client data is still on Excel Companies have not started using modern CRM platforms and instead keep their client data in Excel. This can be a security hazard not to mention that the data can easily be erased. 3. Quality is a long-term investment. You don't buy a new car with the idea that you will start paying money to fix it in one year, right? That is the case with software development. Products are built at a high pace nowadays to meet user needs. The focus is purely on that. But the question is how to make it sustainable. With more features added to the system, its complexity grows inevitably. Even having a great team of engineers does not save you from that. At some point, you will start having issues without the ability to check that everything that is built works. It is quality control. For this purpose, QA engineers are hired — they need to check that everything is in good shape. There is one problem with that — the capacity of QA engineers. It is limited. It means with the growing number of system features, you have a bigger scope to test. Your ability to release features often slowly disappears. So, you hire more QA engineers. Congrats — you are in the cycle of linear growth of features vs QA engineers. Not sustainable. This is what I thought when I managed a team that developed a CMS system. We had a big product, with many features, and integrations, and it was growing. Our release cycle was 6 months — quite long for today's standards. Additionally, at the end of these 6 months, we had 1,5 months of testing/integration/bug fixing/preparation for the release. So 25% of the time, we worked on product stabilization. Crazy. Something needed to be changed. I and our QA lead decided to cover everything with automated tests eventually. I will not go into details about how we did it, but in a year: — QA engineers and Developers have created 1000 (literally) tests. — Our preparation for the release dropped to 2 weeks (still integration with other systems was not covered by automation). — Our quality improved significantly — 30 prod bugs per week dropped to 2-3 minor weekly issues. — And most importantly — we freed up the team's time for developing new features. If you think about it we gained money for the company as a result. No additional QAs hired. Imagine if the team created automated tests from day one. Or at least after the MVP stage. How much time and effort could be saved? That is why now I always encourage our clients to invest in this. This is a long-term investment, but the ROI is high.

Almost every engineering company has its IT department. Some already sell software. Today, companies such as EY or Deloitte write their software. Can it miss us in the construction industry? It was like that in the 80s and 90s. Anyone who could do math could program. We wrote the first static programs ourselves. Then specialized companies took over the development of software. This will continue to be the case, but today we are observing a trend where individuals and companies need to adapt something to their needs. And it is better to do it in-house. Is it the right person? Let's be realistic: "the match made in heaven" is too high a requirement for a new person you are looking for on the technical team. However, this person should still meet three main requirements. We at Base Blocks advise you to apply them even when you hire a person as part of a team augmentation service we provide. 1. Tech skills, obviously. The person should be prepared to do a job. But look beyond that — how intelligent a person is in general. Because having the skills needed today does not mean you won't have changes in the tech stack in 6 months. Make sure that person can learn new things from their area of expertise to not look for someone new over time. 2. Fit into the company culture. Even if it is a contractor, you should still pay attention to this. The tech team works in one ecosystem, so having people support and embrace it will help keep morale and pace high. 3. Ownership. Having an engineer who owns not only his/her part but also cares about your product is so important. This attitude will strengthen the product and allow it to develop. And, by the way, this characteristic is not so difficult to check: listen to how a person talks about previous products in which they participated. Do they speak only on the technical stack or about the idea, their contribution, and the product's success too?
