Submissions on the International Visitor Levy close today. https://lnkd.in/eDdmqBZF In recent conversations about increasing this levy, a couple of questions keep coming up: why might we increase it to the max? And how can we be sure funds will go to the right place? My answer to the first question is fairness. Not everyone gets to travel, but everyone has to pay tax. At a time when so many New Zealanders are under financial pressure – as are councils and small, locally owned businesses – it seems only fair that we ask visitors to contribute to all the amazing public places, spaces and services that make our little country so great. With the Minister of Tourism setting an expectation that we double our export earnings from the industry, those pressures will mount. By securing more funding from those with the privilege to visit us (excepting Aussies and Pasifika, who are exempt from paying the levy), we can work collectively to address those pressures so no New Zealand community is left scrambling. I just don't buy the idea that overseas visitors won't come – just look at the way the wind's blowing. Too hot, and mostly from the north. Among IVL recipients are DOC, Tourism NZ and the New Zealand Cycle Trails, but there's no shortage of other worthy contenders that could return multiple benefits including a whole bunch more trails, nature reserves and conservation projects that can enrich our country while helping secure our marketing edge as one of the world's best places to visit, work and live. Any additional IVL funds will be hotly contested, and the sharks will soon start circling. Industry leaders ought to be alert to any big, fossil-fuel-reliant or otherwise environmentally profligate corporations seeking a subsidy to continue their business in Aotearoa on the basis that we need them. There are plenty of precedents of that. We can do better.

If tourism is better by 2029, what will we be doing differently? How should EU institutions provide effective support to the visitor economy during the next 5-year mandate? Organisational and system-wide change is needed: this is not something the sector can deliver by itself. The potential for the visitor economy to deliver long-term positive impact across Europe is clear. With the right enabling framework it will. The European Tourism Manifesto is working on a new set of priorities built on cross-sectoral consensus to inform policy makers and officials as the EU’s institutions reset post-election. Success will depend on effective action that has wide support. Reaching agreement requires collaborative and creative effort that responds to a broad range of interests from community to corporate. The Lib Dems have launched their manifesto. Some key policies for tourism: A commitment to 'upgrade the status of tourism in government with a dedicated Minister of State for Tourism and Hospitality.' A commitment to expand Youth Mobility to more countries, to 35yo, to three years duration, and abolishing fees for YMS visas. A commitment to 'end the sewage scandal' and legally binding targets to prevent dumping to bathing waters. Investment to make the the UK the world leader in zero carbon flight. BUT Banning some domestic flights and a moratorium on airport expansion. An increase in council tax to 500% for 'second home owners'. Vienna has highlighted itself as a premier conference destination, hosting a #record 6,500 congresses and corporate events in 2023, a 49% increase over the previous year and 18% more than the record-setting year of 2019. With these events resulting in 1,591,000 overnight stays — a 34% increase from 2022 — Vienna's success in revitalising its conference sector post-pandemic is evident.   In a significant move demonstrating the commitment to #sustainability and industry support, the Stadt Wien has continued the extension of the #ViennaMeetingFund with an additional €4 million investment for the period 2025-2028.   From 2025, the maximum funding from the Vienna Meeting Fund of 60,000 euros available per event, will require the event to be held as a #GreenMeeting or #EcoEvent. Changes to the way UK passport holders enter the EU are on the horizon. The good news is that you will no longer need a physical stamp. The bad news? More admin, more queues and more costs. There are two major changes to EU entry that are coming in the near year (or so). The UK is considered a ‘third country’ for entry to the EU, post-brexit. That is why you will have to join a 'taking back control' queue this summer for a stamp allowing 90 days entry to the EU. And why passport validity changed. In the Autumn, stamps will be replaced by the Entry/ Exit system (EES) which will collect biometrics (fingerprints and photos) for all visitors so that electronic gates can again be used like in the old days (the 2010s). This is good news. Apart from the first time such data is collected which will take 1-2mins per person. October half term will be fun. The second change is the introduction of ETIAS, which is comparable to the US ESTA permit and all third country nationals will need to apply online for one of these before travel. Costing €7 per adult (18-70), this will be a multiple entry permit valid for 3 years or until your passport expires. The 90 day rule still applies per single visit or as a maximum stay over a rolling 180 day period. Alternatively, you could check your family tree to see if you are eligible for an Irish passport then you can ignore all of the above! #passports #redtape #whereyourjourneybegins
