In January I posted an article (see link in comments) on running my heat pump for half the cost of a gas boiler; I promised to report back at the end of the heating season. Well, according to my calculations, I heated my house for exactly half the cost of using a gas boiler, despite my algorithm not working correctly in the first couple of months. For those who didn't read the article, I've achieved this by running my heat pump flexibly on Octopus Agile. I've not felt any significant discomfort when turning off my heating for up to three hours; I have been doing some pre-heating before the peak hours, and the controls do automatically restart the heat pump if the temperature drops to 18C, so the house never actually gets cold. The chart shows the unit costs for electricity and heat, as well as what I would have been paying for gas heat (adjusted for boiler efficiency from gas price and including the standing charge, which I no longer pay). Over those 7 months shown, it cost £499.80 to supply 12,490kWh of heat, at an average heat cost of 4p/kWh. Interestingly, my sCoP has not really changed and may have improved. My first year sCoP was difficult to determine because my heat meter wasn't working properly, but my 'gCoP' (degree-day adjusted historic gas kWh / ASHP electric kWh) was 4.1 in the first year and I estimate it to be 4.5 this year or a 'real' (heat out/electricity in) sCoP of 3.9. It seems likely that this is because I was using the ASHP adaptive control this year, whereas last year I ran it in pure weather compensation mode, which sometimes resulted in cycling. So for some people (but not everyone - nor would you want everyone to do it), running a heat pump flexibly rather than focusing purely on running 'long and low' with the highest possible sCoP, is likely to be a much more cost effective way to heat the home.

🔥 Interesting read on Labour's GB Energy Scheme.... A large focus on Offshore Wind... but.... it is the potential £3bn local investment plan into Community Energy that caught my eye. A lot of this happening in the US so it would be interesting to see how it could be pushed in the UK market. A sensible idea to me. Who so we think will be the supply chain beneficiaries for an investment of this level in Community Energy Projects? (Recruiters aside 😉 ) #energytransition #sustainability #climatechange
