Rethinking Supply Chain Strategies for UK North Sea Floating Wind Farms – It’s time to Face the Reality of our Situation As the UK moves forward in its commitment to renewable energy, floating offshore wind presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities, especially in the North Sea. A critical hurdle here is the supply chain and infrastructure limitations. There has been so much focus on doing everything here in the UK. However currently, our infrastructure is not fully equipped to handle the large-scale demands of floating offshore wind projects. The simple practical reality of the situation is that the infrastructure just does not exist for us to do it all ourselves and the development of our existing offshore wind industry (Fixed bottom) should surely have highlighted this fact by now. An Alternative Strategy The clock is already ticking yet there are still many decisions seemingly not yet taken. Is now the time (if we haven’t already) to consider alternative strategies? What if we manufacture overseas, where facilities might already support such demands? We could then focus on developing our ports and installation capabilities here in the UK. This approach not only speeds up the initial manufacturing process but also bolsters our local economy by focusing on assembly and operational maintenance, creating sustainable job opportunities. Benefits: Speed and Efficiency: Leveraging existing global manufacturing capacities could circumvent the bottlenecks of building new facilities from scratch. Economic Growth: By focusing on assembly and installation, we invest in our local infrastructure, enhancing our ports and increasing employment in high-skill areas. Innovation and Leadership: Establishing the UK as a hub for the assembly and maintenance of floating wind farms positions us as a leader in offshore renewable energy. These Lead Partners will support the MEC’s ambition to make the UK the world leader in tidal stream and wave energy. https://lnkd.in/eczVqGdx Very valid BBC article on CMALs new LNG ferries which raises the question was and is LNG a valid green soloution? The world has changed a lot in the last 10 years, so why has the LNG operation requirement not been reviewed? With the Arran route in such a mess and the largest vessel Caledonian Isles languishing in a Liverpool dry dock for unplanned steel corrosion repairs, surely getting the Glen Sannox into operation should have been the overriding priority for the summer rather than commisioning the LNG system which could be done when Glen Rosa enters service. In the legal contract between CMAL and the Operator Calmac Ferries, it is stated very clearly the operator has no control over specifing reqirements for new vessels. The contract very clearly states CMAL are entirely responsible for specifiying design and procurement of new vessels. These vessels have LNG propulsion because CMAL wanted them to have LNG propulsion. It is bizarre they are still insisting the LNG systems are finished when they have not put the bunkering facility in place. Contractually CMAL are also responsible for ensuring the operator properly maintains the vessels and CMAL technical staff carry out twice yearly inspections, one of which is at drydock. So how did the steelwork problems due to poor maintenance over the last 5 years on Caledonian Isles go unnoticed? The people and businesses of Arran must be apoplectic with rage over the arrogant mis-management of this shambles.

More good news from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights (AFI) database. 33 new orders for alternative fueled vessels were placed in May, bringing this year’s total to 127. This represents growth of 55% compared to the first five months of 2023, reinforcing the view that investment in alternative fueled vessels is on the rise. Methanol continues to be the headline story with 23 new orders for methanol fueled vessels placed in May. Ten of these came from the container segment with strong activity also coming from bulker carriers (5) and car carriers (4). A total of 70 new orders for methanol fueled vessels have now been added to the AFI database in 2024, accounting for 56% of all new orders for alternative fueled vessels in 2024. Orders are still being placed for LNG fueled vessels (8). )Momentum for ammonia also continues, with two new orders for ammonia fueled vessels bringing this year’s total to 11, compared to just two for the whole of 2023. #AFI #newbuildings #decarbonisation ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just my thought - and please share your thoughts. It seems to me that posts here on LinkedIn (I mainly see container shipping content) is increasingly showing content with pretty graphics and data - but no real insights and thoughts as to what the context is, or what it means. Sort of like showing the glass is exactly 58.7% full but nothing beyond that. And with zero follow-up or engagement from the accounts posting it. This to me feels as AI generated content for marketing purposes, but of course I do not know. What is your view? Do you see the same? Does it give you value? And if yes, what is the value?

Excellent article from Splash in 2021 with present applicability as nothing changes towards seafarer’s life. The industry needs a wake-up call and putting pressure on governments and industry leaders is crucial. Even small actions can contribute to positive change. It's important to remember that seafarers are the backbone of global trade, and they deserve better treatment.

Today we had the joint Ports and Shipping Working Group (UK Major Ports Group, British Ports Association and UK Chamber of Shipping members) on Environmental Sustainability in London. I forgot to take a photo at the meeting, so you have one from my phone taken just along the river, near to that big building where lots of decisions are made that impact us all! 😉 We had a busy agenda including sections on green corridors, net zero ports, single use plastics, FuelEU Maritime, biofouling and more. Special thanks to our guest speakers Amber Coluso from Port of Los Angeles for presenting on alternative maritime power (and getting up so early to do so - thank you Amber!), Anaëlle Boudry from ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) for talking on FuelEU Maritime and Scope 3 emissions and Megan Turner from Port of Dover for sharing an update on their green corridor ambitions. Also to Lisa T Lewis for chairing the session and Elise Nyborg for helping us pull the day together. Some really useful updates and points of reflection for the maritime sector in the UK, particularly the contrasts and learning from elsewhere across the globe. We have many common challenges, and although each pathway will be unique, it can be shaped by the learnings from others. Day 160 of the Red Sea crisis – and other news After a few quiet days attacks have resumed. This morning UKMTO reported that a merchant vessel in the southern Red Sea saw a missile impact the water close to their port side. In the Indian Ocean, 420nm southeast of Somalia’s coastline, a vessel was reported to be boarded by an unknown number of assailants from two small boats some 2 hours ago. Additionally, US forces reported that they had show down 4 drones over Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. In Baltimore, MSC has now also annonunced the resumption of multiple of their regular services after the access channel has been reopened. Hapag-Lloyd has announced the launch of a new China – West Africa – North Europe direct service with first sailing being on the vessel “Express Argentina” which – for the the trade – is very small at a capacity of just 3500 TEU. The headhaul routing will be Yantian-Singpore-Tema-Wilhelmshaven-Antwerp. It is unusual to see such small vessels on Asia-Europe from the major carriers and it is clearly a sign of the extreme space-pressure on the trade presently, and resembles some of the vessel insertions we also saw during the pandemic disruptions. It should also be noted that the call in Tema in Ghana means that the service will only need to report CO2 emissions under the EU ETS scheme from Tema to Wilhelmshaven (4200 nm) and not from Singapore to Wilhelmshaven (12000 nm going around Africa)

We launched Angle Recruitment, Maritime Talent Experts and moved into our first office in September 2023. Fast forward 10 months, we have just made our third office move, much sooner than expected. We're settled into a private office at the The Executive Centre, a fantastic co-working space with a stylishly designed shared executive lounge, reception, and pantry. The name is spot on, and it truly has an executive feel. Our clients and candidates appreciate our private meeting room facilities, and the team at Angle really enjoy the working environment, so do I! I recently came across a post by Steven Bartlett from The Diary Of A CEO that really resonated with me: “If you have a team of five, each person represents 20% of your company culture. Ensuring that your initial hires truly embody your values is key because that's the culture you will scale.” I couldn’t agree more. While it's great to see our company growth, I'm cautious about scaling too quickly. Ensuring our team is the best in class, gets all the help and development they need, supports one another and truly enjoy their jobs is far more important than rapid expansion. I'm proud of the balance we've struck in our first year, and the results have been outstanding. It's a testament to the incredible work the team is doing.
