"There's no such thing as 5G" - a real developer speaks For all telecom people excited about #5G SA and all people excited about #6G watch/listen to this. I start it where Tim Panton talks with Alan Quayle and Giovanni Tarone about using 5G for his racing driver training project. Amazing what the radio has achieved since Tim built 2G base stations himself. "It’s all the stuff behind the radio that is the problem!" It is noted this is before 5G SA has been deployed but this is the world everybody outside #telecom lives in. The provocative question with the current state of the industry is when 5G SA will be fully deployed and whether that will be before 6G is touted to start? We are keen to fix 5-10 years from now, we need to fix it today. Listen to his real-world experience as a developer and consider how the network can materially help today and in the future. SHAKING UP UK BROADBAND: NETOMNIA AND BRSK’S GAME-CHANGING DEAL Big news in the UK broadband world: Netomnia and Brsk are joining forces in what's being called the biggest merger yet among alternative network providers. This move is part of the industry's bid to give BT and Virgin Media O2 a run for their money in the full-fibre rollout across the country. The companies struck the deal last week, creating one of the largest "altnets" out there. Investors have been pouring billions into these altnets, hoping to challenge the big players. With the focus shifting from just laying down fibre to actually signing up customers, this kind of consolidation was pretty much expected. Everyone’s looking to get a return on their investment in the digital upgrade. We've seen other big moves recently too. For example, CityFibre announced it was buying Lit Fibre back in March, and Virgin Media O2 agreed to take over Upp in September. In this deal, Brsk will come under Netomnia’s parent company, Substantial Group, but it’ll still run independently with Brsk's CEO, Giorgio Iovino, staying in charge. They’re also creating a new wholesale company to combine their networks and potentially bring other altnets on board. Jeremy Chelot, CEO of Substantial, Netomnia, and their sister company YouFibre, said this merger is a major step towards becoming the UK’s third-largest full-fibre network, aiming to compete with Openreach and Virgin Media O2. Chelot mentioned that the market has been pretty fragmented with many small players, leading to uncertainty. This deal aims to create a more stable competitive environment, and they’re open to further consolidations. Currently, their full-fibre services reach 1.5 million premises with 140,000 customers already connected. They’re planning to use up to £900 million in debt to expand to 3 million premises and around 500,000 customers by the end of 2025. Iovino added that merging will help them break even on earnings a lot sooner and make the group an attractive consolidator in the market. The merger is set to be finalised soon, pending regulatory approval. No job cuts are expected. By the end of 2023, altnets collectively reached 12.9 million premises and had 2 million customers. #broadband #consolidation #netomnia #brsk #altnets

Monetization of the 5G network has been a hot topic for a number of years. However, more and more I seeing predictions that the key to 5G monetisation is through the use of Network APIs. Network APIs provide high-value enterprise capabilities such as fraud-detection, resilience and quality-on-demand (QoD) they enable developers to access important capabilities in the service providers networks but also provide service providers with a slice of the enterprise service revenue. In Ericsson's excellent 5G Talks Series - Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica-Vivo in Brazil talk about the importance of Network APIs and talk about Vonage's Global Network Platform (GNP) and its role in enabling the developer community. #telecoms #5g #networkapis https://lnkd.in/eZ9_7EgH

I've written a short article on the importance for telcos of building skills for the future and why this should be very much a board-level topic. Telcos' ambition to become techcos (i.e. think, operate and gain rewards like hyperscalers) has been a topic very central to my work in the last six months. One of the key aspects of such a transformation are the people, and especially skills and capabilities. Surprisingly, when we started talking to the industry about it, a lot of people seemed to believe this was an HR issue. But if a company is serious about undergoing a transformation of its business models, financial model, partnership model and focus, the change starts from within, and people are central to it. One of our field tests showed that moving a carrier-grade FWA modem from just inside a low energy window to just outside of the window using a LINXC Bridge doubled the downlink data rate to 800 Mbps from 400 Mbps. The uplink data more than tripled from 20 Mbps to over 70 Mbps.

Telcos have a monetisation challenge but their is light at the end of the tunnel??? I was reading this article to find what was that light, that new exciting revenue source. Apparently in some years they will have removed old infrastructure and put in place 5G and FTTH. That is excellent but by then 50% of the EU telcos will have merged or gone bankrupt due to their 5G debt. So is the light that because competition has gone down and efficiency has been brought in, customers can now be charged more for the same data plan and profits are made? The telco world has a Hairy Potter Problem with 5G debt and insufficient new revenues. The way to solve it is to create new products that customers want to pay for, not copy ideas from others (hosted email, cloud, telco api, App Store, GenAI,…) and offer a worse product on a national scale vs an existing global platform. Twilio is great examples. Twilio offers a simple API to send SMSes globally at a low price. Telcos offered more complex, national and often more expensive solutions and were surprised they were not working. Same for their cloud services vs AWS, their mobile App Store vs Apple,... Don’t copy. Find large customer hair on fire problems and offer customers great, easy and affordable solutions. If you don’t know how, let’s talk…
