"Based on discussion at an HTA Design round table in February of planners and urban designers, I concluded that creating a code of physical parameters for development across an entire local authority isn’t a practical reality. But creating the circumstances whereby a number of distinct codes can be used to identify a neighbourhood-based vison for placemaking is both possible and highly desirable." "Local authorities must curate the process but cannot be left to do so alone. In every corner of government and its quangos people are talking about creating and sustaining ‘place’ and one such, The Office for Place, has the specific remit of supporting the planning system to create better quality outcomes. There is a need for sharing of best practice, for the dissemination of templates and ready-made solutions to demystify the process. It was my great pleasure to Chair the Women in Architecture fringe function #burohappold yesterday. I’d like to thank our great panelist’s Julie Bramsdon Suzanne Ross Hazel Whittaker Marsha Ramroop FRSA FIEDP and Pepper Barney FRSA FIPM for their thought provoking discussion and our host Anna Ifanti and of course the Women in Architecture UK steering panel at this years #UKREiiF event. It was a really positive discussion with lots of great ideas and energy from the panellists in discussing the #GenderPayGap. Here are my 5 golden nuggets from the discussion to take away and apply:- 1. Ask for a pay rise as few employers in a weak economy bring this to the table. 2. Be positive as progress ‘is’ being made and you can be part of that change by being proactive and involved. 3. Transparency & Communication is key- do ask what you need to do to progress, agree kpi’s to track progress in agreed timeframes - not open ended. 4. Visibility- It’s hard to be what you can’t see but not impossible. Look for role models , mentors, this lifts the spirit and helps focus the mind. 5. Accountability- Map out what you want to achieve and be accountable to yourself, its your career and no one is as invested in it as you are. Finally the times are changing there is absolutely no reason why you can’t be a very successful leader / architect and manage to have a great family life, the mentality of the pilgrimage for architecture is out of date, but do know the numbers. A well balanced happy life is your primary objective and that means feeling fulfilled at work and at home. You’ve got this !

❗ The Royal Town Planning Institute's response to DLUHC's Accelerated Planning Service consultation is now out. Decision making times clearly need to improve, but we question whether targeting one aspect of planning services - non-EIA major commercial developments - will bring about the systemic, sustained improvements to the system and its capacity that we want to see. Indeed, there are some major risks in doing so. Nice to see a step towards cost recovery for some planning application fees, though...

What is Inclusive Design? I was privileged to participate in the conversation in the May gb&d magazine which featured many perspectives on inclusive design, including references to technology interfaces, consumer products, architecture and the built environment, design implementation, physical access, wayfinding, assistive technology, emotional health, inclusive spaces, employee training, and built examples. The article emphasizes...... "In an age where thoughtfulness seems largely absent from the technologies, products, and environments we interact with on a daily basis, inclusive design provides a breath of fresh air for everyone involved." Professor James White and colleagues at the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE) have received ESRC funding to explore how cities can be planned and retrofitted for net-zero living. URBAN RETROFIT UK will work with partners across all four nations of the UK and internationally to investigate urban retrofit successes and challenges, including barriers to scaling up. This is part of a £9.5million investment by ERSC into five projects that will research place-based approaches to an environmentally sustainable future, providing evidence to support local and national decision-making. As Project Lead, Professor James White will lead a team of researchers from Cardiff University, Dalhousie University, University of Sheffield, University of the West of England and the University of Ulster. They will collaborate with UK partners to identify and examine place-based urban retrofit case studies being delivered through local planning and development systems in Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow and Sheffield. The team will co-produce a framework mapping the critical intervention points required to close the implementation gap between national policy and local delivery. This will form the basis of a toolkit for planning authorities, property developers and communities. An international urban retrofit hubs network will also be established to share learning. Principal in our London Planning Team, Laura Jenkinson, is featured in Building Magazine this week, discussing the challenges of retrofit, and what a new government could do to improve the current system. She comments on the race to quality and need for intervention to prevent stranded assets, exploring prime examples of where retrofit is being successfully achieved. Ahead of RIBA's election event on climate action: Delivering a low carbon built environment at 2.00 this afternoon, UK AD has sent each candidate (Oluwafunmbi Adeagbo, Duncan Baker-Brown and Chris Williamson) and the current RIBA President, Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, an Open Letter containing a set of key actions. More radical and systemic change is required, with the greatest action needed at the highest leverage points involved in changing any system. It is here that key institutions such as the RIBA must lead. We call on all candidates for this new term of office to engage clearly and directly with these policies as the driving force for the RIBA’s actions on the planetary emergency in the short, medium and long terms:   - The mindset or paradigm out of which the system - its goals, power structure, rules, its culture - arises. - The goals of the system. - The distribution of power over the rules of the system. - The rules of the system (incentives, punishments, constraints). - Information flows. - Material flows and nodes of material intersection. - Driving positive feedback loops. These 7 leverage point headings are taken from the Donella Meadows essay on 'Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System'.
