Astrobiology is a field that is consistently enhanced by technology and space exploration. It ties together questions relating to the origin, distribution, and evolution of life in the universe.

In this essay, the conditions necessary to sustain life will be reviewed; how these requirements may be fulfilled within our Solar System will also be examined. Current, observational evidence for life on these bodies within the Solar System will be analysed. As such, the aim of this essay is to…

  • Networks Project: Preferential and Random Attachment Models of a Complex Network

    -

Analytic and numerical results are presented for three models of a complex network
    exhibiting growth via attachment.

  • Complexity Project: The Oslo Model

    -

Complexity characterises the behaviour of systems in which the components interact in multiple ways, follow local rules, and exhibit inter–dependency. It is generally used when the interactions between the system components culminates in a higher order of emergence.

Complexity is a fundamental feature of our universe. Researchers have encountered it in many different areas; from computer science, to sociology, to engineering. Complex systems are composed of many small parts without centralised control; e.g. bird flocks, financial markets, social networks. Whilst emergence is a general concept referring to how new levels of organisation are formed as we group more components together, the theory of self organisation provides numerous concrete models for understanding how this process takes place.
Self–organised criticality is a property of a system that arrives at a critical state by organising its own behaviours; no external parameter tuning is necessary. One of these models is the Oslo Model, which shall be investigated in this report.
