Technology and AI are revolutionising sports across multiple dimensions, from organisation of events, athlete performance to fan engagement. IBM as the pioneering tech global big blue organisation has been doing it for decades with a set of expertise, achievements and case studies that are worth to highlight. One of them is their partnership with Wimbledon Tennis Championship. Their over 30 years of partnership is impressive and important for the longevity and acumen! During Wimbledon 2024 edition that just finished last week I had a pleasure to interview Kevin Farrar - Head of #Sport Partnerships for @IBM UK - Partnership Executive to #Wimbledon/ #AELTC We spoke about his career and the work of IBM in Wimbledon, their partnership the achievements, challenges and highlights. Kevin Farrar is a professional that has over 3 decades in tech and his experience at IBM acting as a trusted advisor on technology, innovation, and adoption in the sports industry is unique. Kevin work with Wimbledon is impressive and critical as we underestimate the amount of efforts necessary to run the tech, cloud computing infrastructure, digital infrastructure, innovations and data of one of the biggest sports event in the world. And the crown of the Tennis super sports tournaments - Wimbledon the oldest tennis tournament in the world, held for the first time in 1877 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. As #Wimbledon 2024 finishes my notes on AI, Sports, Tennis and #IBM GenAI Catch Me Up and Wimbledon Case study #ArtificialIntelligence (#AI) is increasingly being integrated into #sports, with tennis serving as a notable example of its significant impact. Globally, billions of people are passionate about sports, and tennis ranks as the 4th most popular sport, with an audience of 1.2 billion people, according to industry benchmarks. Research is showing us how to use these innovative technologies and AI to accelerate better ways to play and watch the sports we love. Special Tennis. Key aspects of IBM and Wimbledon 30+ years collaboration: Data Analytics and Insights: Since 1990, IBM has collected over 62 million data points, providing real-time match statistics and player insights. AI and Cloud Technologies: hybrid cloud model to handle the enormous data flow and digital traffic during Wimbledon. The infrastructure can scale up by 55,000% during the tournament to meet the high demand Fan Engagement: tools to enhance fan engagement. An example was the AI-powered “Have Your Say” feature Technological Innovation: IBM watsonx, an enterprise-grade AI and data platform, to develop features like AI Commentary for highlights videos and AI Draw Analysis. In-Game & Post-Match Statistics, Analysis and Predictive AI In 2024, Wimbledon and IBM introduced the feature ‘Catch Me Up’, leveraging generative AI to enhance the fan experience. This tool provides personalised summaries of tennis matches, allowing fans to quickly catch up on the action they’ve missed. The impact of AI in sports and tennis is still in its infancy. 2024 Chicago AI Week 25 to the 28th June I am privileged to be part and a speaker of the Chicago AI Conference 2024 the main event of the Chicago AI Week. The way #AI needs to be addressed is more important than ever! We need to reverse engineering the approach to developing, managing, creating and using artificial intelligence tools now! It is in our hands how we can use AI the most important underhyped (reusing the words of Eric Schmidt) holistic technology of our times and human civilisation so far! To reverse engineer the use of AI in a sustainable and human-centric way, we must start by redefining better our goals and priorities. Instead of focusing solely on efficiency, profitability, or technological advancement. The key element is how we prioritize the long-term well-being of individuals and society as a whole. This means be human centric when developing AI systems. And make sure they are transparent, accountable, and aligned with human sustainable development values such as fairness, privacy, and autonomy. By embedding these principles into the creation, thinking, design and deployment of AI, we can ensure that this holistic powerhouse technology serves the interests of humanity rather than undermining them. To reverse engineer AI sustainably and human-centrically, we must: 1. Prioritise human well-being, fairness, privacy, and autonomy in AI design and deployment. 2. Engage diverse stakeholders to identify risks, mitigate consequences, and ensure equitable distribution of benefits. 3. Involve and invest urgently in education, digital literacy and make sure it becomes part of everyday lives in an empowering way that is fostering solutions, creating new jobs and improving humanity ingenuity, innovation and amplifying capacities. Like in the 1st Industrial Revolution we shifted radically all humanity, cities and communities. AI is redesigning our interactions, cities, society in a faster than ever, creating big challenges but also jobs, opportunities that did not exist just months ago! By shifting our mindset to view AI as a tool for human flourishing, we can harness its power responsibly to address global challenges.
