Exciting news 🚨 WIEGO is working with TRANSFORM - BUILDING SOCIAL PROTECTION FLOORS IN AFRICA to develop a new training module for African government officials that will include the extension of social protection to workers in informal employment. TRANSFORM is a learning initiative which focuses on the implementation of national social protection floors in Africa, developed by Africa-based and African experts. The “Social Protection Extension through Integrated Systems” module will support practitioners operating within and across social insurance and social assistance to lead sustainable extension of income support systems to previously uncovered groups. It intends to promote context-appropriate, human-centred and integrated approaches rooted in a thorough understanding of those uncovered, focusing on the diversity of the informal economy, labour market, and gender dynamics. The module will be available in 2025 for use in the MENA and African regions. Congratulations to Laura Alfers and Florian Juergens-Grant, and all others involved in this project! #SocialProtection #InformalEconomy #SDG

Rest in power Iván Calnacasco 🕊️✊🏽 With deep grief, we share the news of the passing of a participant in the Lxs Rifadxs de la Basura documentary, Iván Calnacasco, on July 1st. Iván was a “volunteer” waste picker for over 13 years. He was a tireless advocate and one of the most passionate voices for the Lxs Rifadxs de la Basura project. Iván actively used his voice to champion the rights and dignity of waste pickers. His commitment and passion inspired us all, and his powerful voice brought significant media attention to the struggles of voluntarios in Mexico City. We stand in solidarity with Iván's family, friends, and fellow waste pickers. To learn more about the documentary and the fight of the voluntarios in Mexico City, see the Lxs Rifadxs de la Basura website: https://lnkd.in/gutRb4aA

Why must human rights due diligence protect ALL workers in the supply chain, including homeworkers? 1️⃣ Legislation that covers only factory workers ignores the real structure of supply chains as in many industries, production takes place in factories, workshops and homes. 2️⃣ Legislation that protects only part of the workforce incentivizes factories to subcontract production to workers who are not covered by the law. 3️⃣ This is a gender issue, as women are always found in the most insecure work: casual work and homework. 👉 Learn more about a recent victory for all supply chain workers and the plan for implementing new laws across the EU: https://bit.ly/4b7sP5d #SupplyChain #EuropeanUnionLegislation
