Why Philanthropy Matters
Non-profit Organizations
A space for exploring philanthropy: what it is, how it works and why it affects all our lives.
About us
Why Philanthropy Matters is a space for exploring philanthropy: what it is, how it works and why it affects all our lives. Across a wide range of outputs and activities, we draw on deep knowledge of history – as well as current issues and trends – to put philanthropy in its proper context and help us all understand where it has come from, what it looks like today and where it might be going in the future. Our aim is to make philanthropy issues engaging and accessible for as many people as possible. We will never talk down to you, but we also won’t drown you with sector jargon or assume that you already know (or care) about the topics we discuss. We see it as our job to bring the discussion to where the audience is, rather than waiting for you to come to us. We regularly produce in-depth articles, shorter snapshot blogs, podcasts, video updates and more, so check us out for regular updates on our work and what is going on in the world of philanthropy. Whether you are a self-confessed philanthropoid, or someone who has never given philanthropy the first thought, we will do our best to provide you with insight and food for thought!

OUT NOW: On our latest episode, we speak to Ian MacQuillin MCIOF(Dip), Director of Rogare - The Fundraising Think Tank about the disintermediation of charities and what it means to develop a theory of fundraising ethics. https://lnkd.in/eEyafpf7 Including: -If people are able to give in disintermediated ways instead of via traditional charities, does this matter? Should we just accept it as a natural evolution, or is something in danger of being lost? -What, if anything, can the various examples of controversy that have arisen around crowdfunding and other forms of disintermediated giving tell us about the value of the role that traditional charities play? -Do fundraising ethics need to go above and beyond what is allowable in legal or regulatory terms? -How could a normative ethics framework help to inform our thinking about the challenges of tainted donations? -What is the distinction between Donor-centric fundraising (DCF) and Community-centric fundraising (CCF), and why has it become such a fierce source of debate?

We're just about to put the Out Of Office on and head off for a well-earned Easter break. If that leaves you suddenly wondering "but where will I get my fix of light-hearted yet deeply incisive philanthropy chat...?", don't worry, there's a whole load of stuff from this month for you to dig into. Like this month's newsletter: https://lnkd.in/exSFq4WW Or the latest episode of the Philanthropisms podcast- one of our great partnership series with European Research Network On Philanthropy: https://lnkd.in/e2yMpzxY Or why not listen to our Director, Rhodri Davies, offering thoughts on the limitations of charity and what we should make of MrBeast on the first two episodes of Third Sector's new podcast documentary series "The End of Charity": https://lnkd.in/evCVNGU2 Or some different thoughts - this time on the case for and against a mandatory payout requirement for UK foundations -on the "What Donors Want" podcast from I.G. Advisors: https://lnkd.in/e2pUak5q Or, if you fancy a read, why not delve into some musings on the relationship between philanthropy and life extension technology: https://lnkd.in/e9NMg4Hm It's all good, so take your pick.

ICYMI Why has Australia's Productivity Commission recommended the creation of a philanthropic funding body owned and operated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and how does this relate to the recognition of historic injustices? We discuss this (and lots more!) on the latest episode of the Philanthropisms podcast with guest Krystian Seibert. https://lnkd.in/eBttQr4g

Here’s an excellent weekend read that some of you might appreciate. “When the word #philanthropy re-emerged into modern English in the late 17th century, it was actually associated far more with notions of social campaigning and reform (and therefore justice), than it was with simply giving money.” Such a great article. Thank you, Why Philanthropy Matters! https://bit.ly/4c7kzDX
