Helen Cumming was a pioneering Scottish whisky distiller and co-founder of the Cardhu Distillery, one of the premium distilleries we at Whisky 1901 work with. Helen played a key role in establishing Cardhu's reputation as a top-quality single malt Scotch, paving the way for other female distillers and whisky makers. Fun fact: Before the Excise Act of 1824, Helen used a distinctive flag to warn illicit distillers of the approaching 'excise man.' When it comes to realising your whisky cask investment, the regauging process is essential. As whisky matures, a small amount naturally evaporates into the wood, known as the 'angels share.' This is typically not more than 2% per year. At Whisky 1901, we meticulously check ABV and liquid levels of all our casks: every two years for those above 50% ABV, and annually for those below 50% ABV. Every cask purchased by Whisky 1901 is regauged and then regauged again upon arrival at Lowland Bond.
