Do you have Gout? This is a very nice short conversation about it, how it happens, what it feels like and what to do if you think you have it. Gout certainly has been on the rise over the last few years and is something that we see in clinic, but blood tests are needed to get a true diagnosis and prescribed medication is often also needed. So, if you have a red, hot swollen joint in your foot or ankle that has come on for no reason and is really painful, contact us or your GP to make sure what it is and what would be the best treatment for it. https://lnkd.in/ekGMDpsc
About us
Walkrite was founded in 2003 in order to provide accessible, high-quality, professional Podiatric care. Although Walkrite specialises in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Podiatry, Walkrite clinicians also have extensive experience in other areas of Podiatric practice and work closely with specialist teams to deliver the best possible care to our patients. We endeavour only to use equipment and provide treatments that are recognised as gold standard, evidence-based and indicated in improving your pain and mobility, at the same time as embracing the latest developments in technology and practice in this field. Walkrite clinicians hold qualifications that are recognised by mainstream regulatory bodies such as the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), which regulates clinicians in the NHS and in the private sector, The College of Podiatry (CoP) which is the main representative body of Podiatrists in the UK and The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) for Walkrite Podiatrists who also work in surgical environments. We are always striving to achieve the best care possible and we aim to provide a positive caring environment that will improve your pain, increase your mobility and improve your quality of life.

Some more evidence of the health benefits of exercise but good preparation also helps to stave off injury whilst you’re doing it!
Is running bad for you? Some more evidence of the benefits here. Also for swimming, cycling and other sports so #exerciseismedicine but you also need to get into it slowly but surely to reduce the risk of injury (especially as we get older). Running isn’t bad for you, just take a lot more time to start and build than you think. It’s a marathon not a sprint (even if it’s a sprint actually….it takes ages to get quicker over shorter distances)! Happy cold, grey exercising everyone!

Being sedentary for more than 12 hours a day increases your risk of death……the good news though, if you’re sedentary for more than 12 hours a day BUT do more than 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, your risk of death is not increased. OK, so, how to apply this to your own life (and extend your life as a result)? Well, if you walk to work and back but go at an easy pace, sit all day and don’t exercise outside of that, increase the pace of walking back from work so that you get at least 20 mins of moderate to vigorous exercise (introducing this slowly but surely and in the right shoes of course)! Or, working from home, having a stand-up desk is not offsetting being sedentary so have an indoor bike / rower and push the pace on it for more than 20 mins or do 20 mins minimum of vigorous floor exercises / So, just 20 mins a day of moderate to vigorous exercise a day and your life won’t be shortened from the affects of your work or home life meaning you are more sedentary. Examples of moderate physical activity: brisk walking, dancing, low impact floor exercises e.g. ab crunches, sit-ups, press-ups . Examples of vigorous physical activity: running, fast cycling, higher intensity floor exercises/HIIT. Part way through a bank holiday weekend might be a good time to try this!

We see adolescents at both ends of the physical activity spectrum in clinic every day. There are lots of reasons why adolescents may not be physically active enough and sometimes this is because of pain and injury like knee pain. This research shows that this lack of physical activity and strength-training can in fact affect adolescents when they hit middle-age. There are lots of things we can do to help adolescents in pain of this is what is stopping them be active. Contact us if you would like to know more or to book in for an appointment. https://lnkd.in/ePp5zKpq
