Let's talk about the elephant in the room – salaries. It's a topic that is always in discussion with our clients. Whether we're discussing living wages, tax allowances, or the opportunity to advance in our careers, the conversation around money can be a tricky one to navigate. So, why keep it a secret? According to Reed’s data from 2021, ads that include salaries have 27% more job applications than jobs that don’t.. Why is that? In a world where candidates have numerous options, getting eyes on your job ad is the first hurdle. Yet, a surprising 44% of employers admitted to never or only sometimes including salary in their job ads. Why the secrecy? Some say it's because pay is experience-dependent (35%), while others fear internal unrest (25%). But, is this tactic costing businesses more than it's saving? Let's dive into the reasons why including salary in your job ads is not just a good idea but essential Increase Your Diversity: The data shows that salary transparency is a fundamental tactic for diversity and inclusion. Job ads that stated salaries saw a remarkable 27% increase in applications from diverse candidates. Reinforce your Brand: A lack of salary transparency can leave a negative impression for candidates. 48% said it impacts how they view a company. Transparency is key; candidates want to know what they're getting into. Save Time and Stay Relevant: Salary is one of the main reasons for candidates searching for a new role. Including it in your job ads makes the recruitment process quicker, attracting more relevant and serious candidates. People Won't Apply: A staggering 48% of 18-35 year-olds have a negative perception of a company that doesn't post salaries in their job ads. That's a lot of talent turned off at the first glance.. Combine with Benefits to Boost Attraction: Candidates want more than just a salary. Post both salary and benefits to increase the attractiveness of your job ads. Benefits are a lot more important to many candidates than employers often realize. So, why leave potential candidates in the dark? Be upfront about your salary and benefits package and set the stage for a positive employer-candidate relationship. At Vinehouse, we understand the importance of transparency in the hiring process. How do you determine if your new hire is successful? When I was working as a consultant, I often helped out clients with employees who were causing all kinds of problems. One day I got a call from a very long-standing HR Manager client about a troublesome employee. “You’re our last hope.” She told me encouragingly. “I prefer to be thought of as your first choice; but tell me what’s happened anyway.” I responded with a laugh. The call was about an employee who had very poor interpersonal skills. He worked in the library at this company and would shout at colleagues, bang the filing cabinet drawers closed and bash his head on his computer screen so loudly that it disturbed people using the facility. There had been numerous complaints about his behaviour. He had been shuffled between many different managers. “How long has he been with you?” I asked. “22 years.” My client responded. “How long has this been going on for, I asked. “22 years.” My client repeated. How can this happen? How can someone carry on like this for 22 years and still be in the job? Actually, it’s really easy. Here’s what you do: You don’t monitor the performance of your new employee You don’t carry out any effective review of their performance over the years You ignore any complaints If it’s really bad, you move the employee to another department and hope for the best. You don’t give any feedback You don’t take any action You may be wondering why this issue had suddenly come up after so long. It was brought up by a new manager who was not happy to put up with it and asked for some help. She was a very good manager. I bet you have at some stage, encountered an employee who everyone knows causes problems, but is still employed by the company or organization. (My experience is that he is higher up they are, the less likely people are to tackle the problem.) It’s no good just assuming all will be well. To monitor performance the new employee needs to have clear objectives and goals. Then you need to make sure you review the performance against these on a regular and frequent basis right from the start. This will make it far more likely that the new employee will do a good job and also that you’ll pick up any issues very quickly and be able to deal with them early.
