About us

The original icon of the rails, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, Europe has been at the forefront of luxury railway travel for nearly half a century, since its first journey in May 1982. The history of this legendary train began in 1977, when Belmond’s founder, James B. Sherwood, bought two original Art Deco sleeping cars at a Sotheby's auction in Monte Carlo with the ambition to bring back to life the ‘golden age of travel’ with the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train. An enduring symbol of luxury, today the train operates between March and December. It features 16 painstakingly restored 1920s and 1930s carriages, inviting guests to surrender to the journey as it criss-crosses Europe’s most dramatic landscapes and uncovers some of the world’s most fabled cities, such as Vienna, Rome, Florence, Paris, Venice and Istanbul. On board, guests can choose between three different accommodation categories - characterful Historic Cabins; lavish newly launched Suites; and opulent Grand Suites; indulge in refined dining by Michelin-starred French Chef Jean Imbert in the colourful restaurant carriages and enjoy an evening of late-night revelry with live performances and handcrafted cocktails in the famous Bar Car ‘3674’.

  • From Paris to Portofino: Two Legends Meet For the first time in its history, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express travelled to the Ligurian coast. Departing from Paris, the train zigzagged towards Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, with romantic landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. From Paris, we moved through the Rhone Valley, on to the dramatic coastlines of Cannes and Monaco, the vistas evolving in an endless series of colours, and tomorrow holding the promise of the glittering Italian Riviera. The dining cars were filled with the likes of seabass with Champagne sauce and caviar, artichoke agnolotti with fragrant sage butter, and stuffed courgette flowers with grilled red mullet and Marmande tomato, as our guests were the first to sample Chef Jean Imbert's summer menu. From France to Italy, the culinary heritage could be tasted in each dish. Arriving in Portofino coincided with the summer solstice, illuminating the spellbinding Ligurian village brighter than ever – a sparkling vision of sea set against a backdrop of colourful houses. Stepping off the train, guests headed to the legendary @belmondhotelsplendido where an evening of La Dolce Vita awaited. A gala dinner featured a bespoke tasting menu created Chef Jean Imbert, with the Gulf of Tigullio setting the scene. • Belmond is proud to announce the launch of our ‘As Seen By’ photobooks, a new ongoing series produced in partnership with Parisian publishers RVB. Each book presents the unique perspective of a single artist as they explore a different destination around the world. As such, these books champion fresh takes on travel photography. The three launch books focus on the work of three incredible female photographers – Coco Capitán, Rosie Marks and Letizia Le Fur – and cast three iconic Belmond destinations in a new light: Caruso on the Amalfi Coast, Mount Nelson in Cape Town, and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in Europe. On May 25th, 1982, the inaugural run of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express departed from London Victoria Station headed to Venice. As the train departed London, 'Etoile du Nord' dining car and one of the sleeping carriages were simultaneously transported onto two railway barges and towed through the Basin of St. Mark's, Venice. The carriages were docked and displayed alongside Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel for a glamorous viewing party. It was a magical moment. Inspired by legendary moments of our train's history, something special is coming. #TheArtOfBelmond #VeniceSimplonOrientExpress Credit: Shirley Sherwood, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: The World's Most Celebrated Train, Revised Fourth Edition
