Improving lives by supporting all professionals in the delivery of kidney care and research

About us

The UK Kidney Association (UKKA) is the leading professional body for the kidney community. We are dedicated to improving lives by supporting the multi-professional team in the delivery of kidney care, education and research - enabling people to live well with kidney disease. In June 2021, following a merger with the British Renal Society (BRS), the Renal Association changed its name to the UK Kidney Association. From its foundation in 1950, the Association has been active in promoting and disseminating research that may ultimately improve outcomes for patients with kidney disease. It has also taken a leading role in the education of healthcare professionals interested in kidney disease. We have a network of over 1,400 professional members and are home to the UK Renal Registry, the British Association of Paediatric Nephrology (BAPN), the renal trainees SpR Club, the Kidney Quality Improvement Partnership (KQuIP), Rare Renal and the National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) and the UK Renal Pharmacy Group.

  • 🚨 Have You Read Our Latest AKI Report? 🚨 View the latest insights into Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) across England, presented in our comprehensive #AKI Annual Report: https://bit.ly/3VWSUzz This latest report is noteworthy for its extensive data coverage, with contributions from 98% of laboratories across England, compared to 87% in the initial 2020 report. Near-complete coverage offers a more accurate and reliable picture of the incidence and impact of AKI on the population. 📈 Key Findings: 🔹Significant geographical disparities in AKI rates across England, highlighting the impact of local healthcare practices, resource availability, and socio-economic factors. 🔹In 2022, over half a million people experienced at least one episode of AKI, with 68.6% of these cases being community-acquired. 🔹AKI incidence was higher in deprived areas (23%) compared to affluent regions (17%). 🔍 Outcomes & Challenges: 🔹Most AKI cases (70%) did not progress beyond stage 1, indicating a less severe impact for the majority of patients. 🔹Despite this, AKI remains a significant contributor to hospital admissions and mortality, particularly for more severe cases. 🔹Patients with AKI had longer hospital stays, with emergency admissions averaging 13 days compared to 10 days for planned admissions. 🔹The risk of death within 30 days of an AKI episode increased with severity, from 13% for stage 1 to 35% for stage 3. 🔹Mortality was higher among patients who developed AKI in the hospital, with more deaths occurring during the winter months. 🔭 Looking Ahead: Despite advances in data collection and understanding AKI’s impact, overall AKI rates and associated mortality have remained unchanged since 2018. This underscores the urgent need for enhanced prevention, detection, and management strategies for AKI. 📚 For Healthcare Professionals, Policymakers, and Researchers: The AKI Annual Report is an invaluable resource, offering the latest information on AKI rates and outcomes. • 🌟 Treatments for rare diseases needed to beat kidney failure 🌟 A landmark study by the UK Kidney Association and UCL, leveraging the National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) – the world's largest of its kind – highlights the transformative potential of focusing on rare kidney conditions. Findings suggest that targeting these conditions could significantly ease the overall burden of kidney disease on patients and the NHS, offering hope for more effective treatments and reduced dependence on dialysis and transplantation. This research underscores the importance of RaDaR and the role of the UKKA in leading kidney health advancement. It's a call to action for the healthcare community to prioritise rare kidney diseases, potentially revolutionising care and outcomes for thousands. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4chjedE
