UK Sport, the Japan Sport Council, the National Agency for Sport in Japan, and the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The MoU is entered into with a view to further developing sport exchanges, information sharing and capacity building between the parties (including for the first time around the societal impact through high performance sport) and to encourage enhanced cooperation between national sporting bodies. The parties will also consider undertaking joint initiatives utilising international (sporting) events as a focal point for collaboration. UK Sport Chair, Dame Katherine Grainger said: “UK Sport is immensely proud to have had an MoU with the Japan Sport Council since 2013, and it’s exciting to be renewing our commitment in Paris, during the Olympics. "Since signing our bilateral cooperation agreement over ten years ago, we have seen many two-way exchanges, creating impactful partnerships between our organisations and our respective national sporting federations. "I am also delighted by UKSI’s inclusion in our renewed partnership. The UK and Japan are both world leading in sport science and technology, so there is much that we learn from each other. The magical sporting moments we will witness in Paris would simply not be possible without the behind-the-scenes support services which enables sports and athletes to realise their potential." 🛹 “Skateboarding is all about falling off and getting back up and that resilience that you build from that, and within my work I take that with me” Lucy Rafferty Adams, Progression Project Lead at Skateboard GB is no stranger to getting back up after a fall, and she is bringing that philosophy to her leadership within sport. UK Sport's Leading to Perform development programme supported those working in the high-performance community who were new to a performance senior leadership role, or aspired to be a senior leader for the Los Angeles or Milan Cortina Olympic and Paralympic cycles. Yesterday our Chief Executive, Sally Munday, spoke to BBC Five Live's Wake Up To Money about the economic benefit of investing in Olympic and Paralympic sport, as well as our investment approach. She said "The reality is for most of the sports we invest in is they are what you would describe as traditionally amateur sports, so they’re not professional, commercial sports. Some of them have commercial arms, but the majority rely massively on Government and Lottery money to enable them to put these programmes together that allow us to employ some of the best coaches and practitioners in the world to give British athletes the best support going into the Games. "We use the Games as a shop window, it’s a place for us to create demand commercially but also demand for people then wanting to participant in those sports. But we recognise the very reason we need public investment is because without it our athletes wouldn’t be able to achieve what they achieve on the world stage." Olympic and Paralympic sports directly contributed £25.5 billion to the UK economy in 2021 and when the wider, total economic impact of Olympic and Paralympic sports are taken into account, that contribution rises to £58.2 billion per year. The research conducted by The Sports Consultancy also demonstrates that the sector was directly responsible for nearly 500,000 jobs which is 3.4% of the UK’s workforce, with more than two thirds of the economic impact generated by the Olympic and Paralympic sport sector being outside of London and the South East.
