  • Diabetes research is really important to help develop new and better treatments and services for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. University Hospitals of Derby and Burton's diabetes research team is looking at innovative treatment approaches and cutting-edge digital technology that help people manage their condition better. We want people who normally wouldn't have access to these opportunities to #bepartofresearch and help us make research more representative of our diverse population. Clinical Research Practitioner and Inclusion and Involvement Manager, Sam Hussain stands next to our digital screen in Normanton with a QR code inviting people to find out more about taking part in research, particularly those from underserved communities. Sam is passionate about healthcare equality and improving outcomes for all communities, particularly in her research specialty, Diabetes. She was awarded the Clinical Research Network East Midlands underserved communities grant, aimed at getting more people from deprived areas to take part in diabetes research. Sam commented: “This is really important as we know from data that areas and population groups with the highest rates of diabetes diagnosis are also the least represented in research and face more health inequalities.” Find out more about our actively recruiting diabetes trials: https://bit.ly/4bUZhby https://bit.ly/4f66tUK Contact Sam on 07469037438 or email samia.hussain4@nhs.net for more information about the trials and find out if you are eligible.

  • Earlier this year, we cared for Alison at our Royal Derby Hospital site. Alison was diagnosed with cancer shortly before she had planned to attend her daughter's wedding in Thailand, and unfortunately, was too unwell to make the trip. However, our committed #TeamUHDB colleagues stepped in to make sure that Alison and her husband, Trevor, were able to join the celebrations from 6,000 miles away - setting up a livestream for Alison and Trevor, where Trevor was even able to make his father of the bride speech. Sadly, Alison has since passed away, but Trevor said that these colleagues became "members of his family" at this time, and helped to create precious memories in her final weeks.
