Last week, I took the step to formally receive training in Autism to support my work as a trustee and educator. Being a trustee for Prism Arts has always been a mark of great pride for me but it’s also provided access to valuable training and workshops—a benefit I would never expect but cherish. This past week Triple A (All About Autism) were commissioned to provide a hands-on, honest and no nonsense course to help begin an education in autism and it’s intricacies. Taught as a team of four, with two members being open and proud of their autism, it was a great opportunity for me to develop a working understanding of neurodivergence. Thank you for the opportunity Catherine Coulthard 🙏

I spent a couple of years working for the National Autistic Society, on a project around the full autism diagnosis pathway (so including pre-diagnosis and post-diagnosis support) across the wider North West. As part of that role, I had the pleasure of working alongside a lovely range of NHS change management specialists from three different NHS regions (Greater Manchester, Merseyside/Cheshire, and Lancashire and South Cumbria) as part of their ODN, or Operational Delivery Network. It was kind of the ODN team to invite me to join them in Manchester yesterday for their annual ODN workshop, reviewing progress in support for autistic people, and people with learning disabilities. A really interesting day, and at a simple human level it was also great to catch up with so many people I'd worked alongside I was also pleased to hear the growing recognition of the need for pre-diagnosis support for autistic people (including autistic adults), particularly given the lengthy waits for getting an autism diagnosis. And terrific to hear a couple of good examples of peer-led post-diagnostic groups, including one run by Triple A (All About Autism) in Cumbria and one run by GM Autism Consortium in parts of Greater Manchester

  • We’re very pleased to see autistic people as a high priority group in the UK Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-28. And that ongoing attention is paid to research with the autistic community. ‘Specific factors that further increase the risk of suicide among autistic people include traumatic, painful life experiences, barriers to accessing support, pressure to ‘camouflage’ or ‘mask’ autism (for example, concealing particular traits that are common in autistic people) and feelings of not belonging. Autistic people report difficulties in accessing mental health support because they have an autism diagnosis, are awaiting autism assessment or because of a lack of reasonable adjustments to services.’ ‘It is important that research decisions reflect the perspectives of people with personal experiences, building on the learning presented by the International Society for Autism Research on Autism community priorities for suicide prevention.’ https://lnkd.in/esZeAHte #Autism #Autistic #SuicidePrevention #AutisticMentalHealth
