I spent a couple of years working for the National Autistic Society, on a project around the full autism diagnosis pathway (so including pre-diagnosis and post-diagnosis support) across the wider North West. As part of that role, I had the pleasure of working alongside a lovely range of NHS change management specialists from three different NHS regions (Greater Manchester, Merseyside/Cheshire, and Lancashire and South Cumbria) as part of their ODN, or Operational Delivery Network. It was kind of the ODN team to invite me to join them in Manchester yesterday for their annual ODN workshop, reviewing progress in support for autistic people, and people with learning disabilities. A really interesting day, and at a simple human level it was also great to catch up with so many people I'd worked alongside
I was also pleased to hear the growing recognition of the need for pre-diagnosis support for autistic people (including autistic adults), particularly given the lengthy waits for getting an autism diagnosis. And terrific to hear a couple of good examples of peer-led post-diagnostic groups, including one run by Triple A (All About Autism) in Cumbria and one run by GM Autism Consortium in parts of Greater Manchester
