🌳 How can Trase help companies, governments and civil society implement the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)? It is a question that our co-directors Helen Bellfield and Toby Gardner are asked regularly. 🔍 There are five main ways Trase can and cannot be used: 1️⃣ Trase can be used to inform risk-based plans to target enforcement checks by competent authorities. 2️⃣ Trase can be used to evaluate the impact of the regulation and provide evidence for planned reviews. 3️⃣ Trase cannot be used by operators and traders to demonstrate compliance in terms of traceability to plots of land. 4️⃣ Trase can be used by operators and traders as one source of evidence in the risk assessment step of the due diligence process (but other data sources would be needed). 5️⃣ Trase data can be used by civil society to help hold governments and companies accountable for effectively implementing the EUDR. ⏳ With just 5 months to go till the #EUDR deadline of 30 December, it is critical that the #EU engages with other importing markets to coordinate efforts around agricultural commodities supply chains, deforestation and other environmental and social risks. 🔍 Our assessment - led by Mark Titley - of the #deforestation exposure of each EU member state from imports of products included in the EUDR revealed how any delay in implementing the regulation will lead to more deforestation driven by EU consumers. Between 2019 and 2021, the EU was exposed to 190,500 hectares of deforestation on average every year while 17.5% of the deforestation exposure was from commodities not regulated by the EUDR. 🤝 To maximise the regulation’s impact on deforestation rates, it is vital that the EU provides financial and technical support for producers. 🌳Only 14% of the UK public is aware that their #pension could be funding #deforestation. Our new animated video, #SavingJane, released today in partnership with Make My Money Matter, Global Witness, Rewriting Earth and endorsed by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE Founder - The Jane Goodall Institute, aims to raise public awareness of this critical link. 🪵The video focuses on the Sumatran rainforest in #Indonesia, where only nine percent of the original tropical rainforest remains. Vast swathes have been lost to palm oil, pulp and paper production. To avoid other forests in Indonesia and across the world meeting the same fate, we need to see stronger action from pension providers. 💷Two-thirds of the UK's top 20 workplace pension providers still do not have a public deforestation policy. And on a global level, Global Canopy’s research reveals that three-quarters of financial institutions with strong net-zero commitments are yet to publish a policy. We urge pension providers to publish deforestation policies and develop action plans to tackle deforestation in their portfolios: https://lnkd.in/ezBu8RmK Read more: https://lnkd.in/e8WhMxUV

🌳 Commodity-driven #peatland loss and #deforestation emit more carbon than #Germany according to Trase - Intelligence for sustainable trade data. In total, deforestation and peatland degradation linked to the expanding production of five globally traded agricultural commodities generate emissions equivalent to 701 million tonnes. Sunday was global #BogDay, so a perfect time to emphasise how countries urgently need to take action on #greenhousegas emissions linked to deforestation and peatland degradation driven by their growing demand for commodities. 🪵Almost all tropical deforestation is directly or indirectly linked to #agricultural expansion. Emissions result when peatlands, carbon-rich forest and other natural ecosystems are cleared to raise livestock and grow crops. #China is the consumer country linked to by far the largest amount of deforestation and peat-related emissions, equivalent to 99.4 million tonnes of CO2 a year. #EU imports are linked to yearly deforestation and peat-related emissions equivalent to 24.2 million tonnes of CO2. 📉 Countries could significantly contribute to reducing global emissions by acting on their supply chains in concert with efforts by producer countries. 🔍 New analysis by Trase’s lead partner in #Indonesia - Auriga Nusantara - shows forests near nickel-processing plants are cleared twice as fast. #Deforestation rose from 33 square kilometers around each nickel smelter to 63 square kilometers - government data on #rainforest loss showed ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e-tPbWcS | The Associated Press Victoria Milko, Ed Davey Camille Fassett The pulp sector is another key driver of Indonesia’s deforestation. Trase’s most recent analyses show a near fivefold increase in deforestation between 2017 and 2022. 🗞The Indonesian pulp and paper industry ranks eighth in the world, employing over 160,000 people and earning export revenues of US$7.5 billion in 2021. Overall pulp production has expanded by 46% in the last eight years. Just over half of the 9.9 million tonnes of pulp produced in Indonesia in 2022 was exported. Of the pulp that is directly exported, almost three-quarters flow to #China. 💨Read how the growing demand from China is leading to a surge in #greenhousegas emissions and the expansion of Indonesian pulp production: https://lnkd.in/e4UkWxRi

🌳Testing for and securing the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of Indigenous Peoples is critical for companies and financial institutions if they are serious about tackling #deforestation. But only 40% of Forest 500 companies are doing this - according to our latest briefing, that shows too often human rights are a blindspot in company and financial institution action. It is clear that effective action to tackle deforestation must go hand in hand with tackling the human rights abuses that happen alongside it. Read the briefing⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dgp2Dxjb Register to join today’s launch webinar at 14:00 BST⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dZ-pd6ZY You'll hear from Global Canopy Global Witness, Instituto Socioambiental, Forest Peoples Programme and People's Palace Projects

🍗 What role does soy play in the #carbonfootprint of chicken production? #Soy is one of the main ingredients in chicken feed and is grown in #Brazil and across Latin America and imported into #Europe. The expansion of soy production is one of the main drivers of #deforestation and land conversion. 📈Trase teamed up with AdAstra Sustainability to help a leading food manufacturer understand how soy in animal feed changes the carbon footprint of its chicken products. AdAstra’s carbon footprinting technology Orbae used Trase data to identify the origins of the soy and calculated corresponding land conversion emission factors. “Tapping into Trase data takes our own data to the next level. The project on soy offers a blueprint for other commodities used in animal feed, and paves the way for the consideration of important metrics such as land occupation, #biodiversity loss and water stress,” said Dr Jürgen Reinhard, Co-founder, AdAstra. 🔎 Here’s how Trase and AdAstra supported the company to address the #climate impacts of its supply chain ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eArPw7wy

🌳The UK is part of the global #deforestation problem. We rely on forest risk commodities – cattle products, cocoa, palm oil, coffee and soy. So action on deforestation must be on the new government’s agenda. 📑A critical first step is creating detailed and effective due diligence obligations promised in the 2021 UK Environment Act. #Labour has promised international leadership in the climate and #nature space but we need more. 💷A 2021 study found #UK financial institutions provided £40 billion in direct finance and £198 billion in indirect finance to companies at risk of causing deforestation. By regulating the #finance sector, the government would create a world-leading law on deforestation. ✍The UK demonstrated real leadership at #COP26 in Glasgow by getting over 100 countries to sign in agreement to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030. Now we need action, not just words, ensuring that commitments don’t become missed deadlines. Helen Bellfield, our Deputy Executive Director explains the key asks from the UK leaders here -> https://lnkd.in/eFy-DsKc #UKgovernment #EnvironmentAct

Trase data can be used to evaluate the impact of EUDR - set to come into effect from 30 December 2024. 📈 Our data can be harnessed to provide an important part of the evidence needed for reviews of the #EUDR, including its possible extension beyond forests to other natural ecosystems and the coverage of more products. Trase data has already highlighted the #EU’s exposure to the conversion of ‘other wooded land’ and native grasslands in South America - currently not covered by the EUDR. 🌳 Trase’s systemic view of global trade will be critical to understanding the net effect of the regulation and any ‘leakage’ effects where deforestation shifts to other commodities, markets or ecosystems. Our co-directors - Helen Bellfield and Toby Gardner - answer the frequently asked questions about the benefits and limitations of our data in the implementation of the EUDR here ⬇ https://lnkd.in/dW_5fycf
