Better health and care for all

About us

Our vision is better health and care for all. We are proud pioneers in integrating health and social care nationally. We passionately believe that the best way to care for people is by focusing on what matters to them, putting them at the centre of everything we do and integrating services around them. We believe that care as close to home as possible benefits everyone. Never has our vision been more important. The impact of COVID-19 has not only increased the pressure across all aspects of health and social care, but those who live in our most deprived coastal communities have seen an increasing gap in health inequalities. We provide health and social care services to our people in their own homes or in their local community. We also run Torbay Hospital (providing acute hospital services) as well as five community hospitals, stretching from Dawlish to Brixham. We support around 500,000 face-to-face contacts with patients in their homes and communities each year and see over 78,000 people in our A&E department annually. We serve a resident population of approximately 286,000 people, plus about 100,000 visitors at any one time during the summer holiday season. We are passionate about creating a fairer and more inclusive NHS for everyone. We employ over 6,500 staff, including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, consultants, and physiotherapists, as well as highly skilled managers, administrators and technical experts. Our people work in a wide range of settings and locations across our communities, depending on their individual role or circumstances. We also have over 800 volunteers who make a difference every day to the people we care for and the services we provide. We were proud to be the first NHS Trust in England to integrate hospital and community care with social care. We know first-hand the positive impact that working together in partnership with others has on our local population – giving everyone a brighter future.

  • 👏 Congratulations to Stuart Mullan, porter at Torbay Hospital who recently won an Our People award! A colleague nominated Stuart for always going above and beyond his job role and being a kind and compassionate person to work with. His nomination said, “Stuart recently took a patient to the ward to visit a relative and when he got there the patient had sadly passed away. Stuart sat with the relative, supported her and put her in touch with bereavement service. He kept the relative up to date throughout the process. Stuart never says no to colleagues or patients, he never brushes them off and says sorry I can’t, if he can find a way to do something he will.” Every day our people and teams do amazing things to care for the people who use our services, support and look after each other, encourage their colleagues to develop and grow, to improve our working environment and make people smile. If you have received excellent care, service with a smile, kindness and understanding or exceptional service from one of our people or our teams, then nominate them 👇 https://lnkd.in/eW6vSTxM

  • 📖 | Our radiology team have created a range of easy read posters to help people with learning disabilities. The posters clearly explain what CT, MRI, x-ray and ultrasound scans involve to help with some of the anxiety people may have, and have a reminder to let the team know if there are any reasonable adjustments that could improve their experience. Well done to Tracey Scagell and the radiology team for your great work 🌟🙌

    • Having an ultrasound scan (easy read)
Ultrasound takes pictures of the inside of your body
After you have told the reception you are here, take a seat in the waiting room
The scan room need to be dark to that your sonographer can see the pictures
For your scan, you will need to lie on our scan bed
The sonographer may ask you to lie in different positions
The sonographer will put some jelly on your skin. It may be cold, it may be sticky, it shouldn't hurt
  • 🌼 Our DAISY award winner Dawn our frailty nurse lead! A huge congratulations to Dawn , frailty nurse lead who is this month’s DAISY award winner. Dawn was nominated by a patient’s relative for going above and beyond to support not only her nan but the other patients on the ward. Dawn as extremely compassionate, competent and knowledgeable and her nomination said, “I was overwhelmed by her compassion and support for her patients. You could tell it was more than a job to her and that she was there because she genuinely wanted to care for her patients and not just because she had to be. She even wetted down and combed an elderly gentlemen’s hair when he became agitated and upset that he didn’t look himself. I thought this was extremely caring and was above and beyond her duties as a nurse. “When your loved one is admitted to hospital it’s a nervous and emotional time. She made us all feel at ease and kept a smile on her face throughout. I am extremely grateful for the level of care she provides and the support she gave today made things a lot easier for all my family and my nan alike.” The DAISY award was created to honour and recognise nurses and midwives for the outstanding work they do providing extraordinary care to patients every day. Do you want to say thank you by sharing your story of how a nurse or midwife made a difference you will never forget? https://lnkd.in/etT977Ac

  • 👶 Our colleagues in maternity were very busy in June delivering 125 babies; 59 boys and 66 girls. We saw six out of hospital births and six water births. Our smokefree pregnancy team helped 12 mothers and one partner quit smoking during their pregnancy, how incredible. 💙 A huge thank you to our amazing midwives for supporting our families to bring their little ones into the world.
