The Open Data Institute works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem
About us
The ODI is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and AI expert, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and headquartered in King’s Cross, London, UK. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem. We want a world where data works for everyone. To do this, we work with businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic and other grant-giving organisations. THE WORK WE DO The ODI operates as an institute, and we also undertake commercial work that advances our mission. Our operating costs are met through a range of grants and commercial revenue. Our work includes applied research; consultancy services; training; and providing free reports, tools and webinars. We focus our efforts in three broad areas: 1. Improving the data practices of organisations so that they can build and manage adequate data infrastructure and data use 2. Tackling challenges so that the data ecosystem works better 3. Gathering and creating research, evidence and knowledge about data and the benefits of open, trustworthy data access, to inform companies and policymakers as they create data infrastructure, assets, practices and policies. If you’d like to help us advance this work, we'd love to hear from you – please get in touch at info@theodi.org

There's still time your tickets for our free webinar on Thursday 11 July 16:00-17:00 BST for AI, data and emerging tech expert Lee Tiedrich in conversation with our Director of Research Elena Simperl. Today’s large language models (LLMs) depend on vast amounts of scraped data for training and potentially other purposes. Scraped data can include facts, creative content, computer code, personal information, brands, and just about anything else. This talk will discuss the current data scraping legal and policy landscape, including the mounting disputes. It will also discuss potential approaches for encouraging responsible and legally compliant behaviours, including codes of conduct, technical tools, model contract terms, and education. Don't miss out! https://lnkd.in/edhRdFtw
