Creating lasting and shared prosperity for the nation

About us

The Crown Estate is a significant national landowner with a diverse £16bn portfolio that includes urban centres and development opportunities; one of the largest rural holdings in the country; Regent Street and St James’s in London’s West End; and Windsor Great Park. We also manage the seabed and much of the coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, playing a major role in the UK’s world leading offshore wind sector. We are a unique business with a unique heritage. Set up by an Act of Parliament, and occupying a space between the public and private sector, we act independently and commercially to grow the value of the portfolio for the nation. We are a company for the country and all of our net revenue profit goes to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation’s finances. This has totalled more than £4bn over the last ten years. Through our activities and investments, we create national environmental, social and financial value both for now and into the long term.

We’re pleased to be entering into a new partnership with Great British Energy. This will enable us to amplify the work we’ve been doing over a number of years to lead the UK towards a decarbonised and energy-secure future, while additional investment powers will allow us to have an even greater impact across all that we do, including nature recovery, and creating economic growth and inclusive communities across our urban centres and rural land.

Our approach to marine spatial planning has been recognised with the Esri ‘Special Achievement in GIS' award at its annual User Conference in California! 🎉 This award recognises organisations which are demonstrating #geospatial #leadership and setting new precedents for the global GIS community. Our innovative Whole of Seabed programme uses #GIS to create a data-led evidence base to inform our approach to seabed management in collaboration with marine stakeholders. This #collaboration between our #Marine and #Digital teams is helping us find the balance between net zero delivery and nature recovery whilst creating a thriving marine economy, so huge congratulations to them for this recognition of their world-leading approach to using digital #technology! #EsriUC24 #Data

Team Coastal Odyssey is on the homeward stretch of the GB Row Challenge 2024! After passing the halfway point at Skye Bridge early last week, the team powered around Scotland and is now making its way down the North East coast of England, on their way back to Tower Bridge! After over five weeks at sea battling some difficult weather, with more than 4,000 tonnes of water sampled, the crew has been keeping their spirits high with pub quiz and music nights onboard. They also had some incredible marine wildlife to keep them company, including seals, compass jellyfish, dolphins and minke whales 🐋! Give them all your support by following the last lag of their journey on their Instagram account @coastalodyssey2024. We look forward to welcoming them back! #GBRowChallenge #RowWithAPurpose #WorldsToughestRowingRace #CoastalOdyssey

We recently enjoyed a thought-provoking evening of insights into and discussions around the opportunities and challenges for enabling growth in the UK climatetech cluster with our new partners Cambridge Cleantech and guests from the climatetech sector. This great discussion is part of our ambition to work together with experts and partners to look at ways to help unlock the potential of climate technology innovations around renewable energy generation and storage, air and environment, water, sustainable communities, agri-environmental and many more related fields. It was great to share the evening with those who have the same mission of promoting climatetech for the benefit of the nation and the health of our planet. Thank you to our team and Cambridge Cleantech for helping organise the event. #climatetech #cleantech #innovation #science #RnD

We’ve been building our expertise and #data capabilities over the past two decades to better understand the seabed we manage. Geographic Information System (#GIS) technology plays a vital role in enabling our approach, including our innovative Whole of Seabed programme, providing a data-led evidence base for our approach to #marine spatial #planning across the seabed. As such, we were proud to present to 40,000 people around the world at the Plenary Session of the 2024 Esri User Conference in San Diego yesterday – the world’s largest GIS conference – on how we use digital #technology to inform our approach to seabed management in collaboration with marine stakeholders, assessing how to balance #NetZero delivery and #nature recovery whilst creating a thriving marine economy. Thank you to Michelle Moore, Jamie Moore and Joe Sykes for presenting so passionately and sharing the impactful work of The Crown Estate to a global audience! #EsriUC24

Today we’ve unveiled details of our pipeline of developments in London’s West End. New Zealand House, 10 Spring Gardens and 33-35 Piccadilly will deliver 250,000 sq ft of office, leisure and retail space into the heart of #London. Alongside this quality space, we are also working with our delivery partners to prioritise sustainable development with construction underway at all three sites, and the creation of a number of training and employment opportunities. These developments mark a core part of our wider strategy across the Capital to contribute to a more accessible, diverse and sustainable city and complement the ‘Park to Park’ project we’re delivering in partnership with Westminster City Council to enhance the public spaces throughout Regent Street, Haymarket and Piccadilly Circus. On Saturday, we were thrilled to host over 50 tech-savvy individuals at our office in London. Participants were tasked with proposing #AI-powered software solutions to an ambitious and pressing challenge: how to generate 50% of the UK’s energy supply sustainably from the seabed by 2050. We’ve come a long way since the first offshore wind turbines were installed almost 25 years ago. But as we look ahead, we need fresh, innovative approaches to the goal of meeting net zero, approaches that take into account the growing number of demands on our seabed, and allow all these different interests to thrive. In partnership with AI first education provider Inversity, we ran a day-long #hackathon, offering bespoke workshops and guidance for participants – who included students, non-profit workers, and even military veterans looking to transition into #tech roles. Congratulations to the winning team from Worcester Sixth Form College who were awarded the top prize of £1,000 for their impressive app-based solution. We were inspired by the proposals – many of which were both implementable and scalable – and are thrilled to be offering internships within our marine and digital departments to top-performing individuals from across the competition, all part of our mission to help nurture a diverse, skilled workforce the industry needs for a sustainable future. Thank you to all the fantastic judges, including Google DeepMind's Suzan (Sam) Miller, Rewriting the Code’s Jessica Furness, Inversity’s James Kuht MBE, and The Crown Estate’s very own Cheryl A A. and Aruj Haider, and everyone who gave their time to make possible such a successful event. https://lnkd.in/d9hZdaKm
