About us
Tate & Lyle Sugars has been refining sugar continuously at Thames Refinery since 1878. Over 140 years later it’s still going strong and today employs over 500 people. Not many companies have remained a favorite household brand - producing the same family of products, at the same location, for well over a century - so what’s the secret of its success? The answer lies in its people and its core values: ambition, innovation and pace. So, while Tate & Lyle Sugars may still be based in the same place, new developments continue. In 2008, Tate & Lyle Sugars became the largest ever UK food and drink brand to switch to Fairtrade (starting with its granulated white sugar) and a project is currently underway to slash the refinery’s carbon footprint by over 25%, thanks to pioneering green technology developed by Tate & Lyle Sugars research and technology teams. In 2010 Tate & Lyle Sugars was acquired by American Sugar Refining, Inc., based in Yonkers, New York, it is the world’s largest cane sugar refining company, dedicated to cane sugar with a total refining capacity of over 6 million tons of sugar per annum. The company produces a full line of consumer, industrial, food service and specialty sweetener products. Across North America, American Sugar Refining owns and operates six sugar refineries -- in New York, California, Maryland, Louisiana, Canada and Mexico -- as well as specialty sweetener production facilities and a strategic warehousing and distribution system that combine to provide seamless production and delivery of its products to customers across the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the European Union, the company owns and operates sugar refineries in England and Portugal American Sugar Refining’s products are marketed through its brand portfolio that includes the premiere sugar brands Domino®, C&H®, Florida Crystals®, Redpath® and Tate & Lyle®.

Julia Clark, our Director of Sugar Ethics, recently visited Richard Cole's sugarcane farm in South Africa to learn about the importance of nurturing healthy ecosystems for long-term farm viability, as part of the 2024 SAI event in Durban South Africa.
📣 As part of our 2024 Annual Event in Durban, South Africa last week, SAI Platform members had the opportunity to visit Ashbrook Farm, a 600-hectare sugar cane operation on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast. 🌱 Observing the long-term benefits of thrashing, meticulous nutrient management, and the integration of multi-species cover crops and livestock grazing on soil health, we heard how forward thinking farmer, Richard Cole's focus on building soil organic content and minimising chemical inputs has led to higher yields and reduced costs, all while mitigating environmental impact. 🧑🌾 From a social perspective, we learned about the transparent performance tracking systems and incentives for improvement that foster a culture of continuous learning and shared goals among farm staff. This has resulted in a loyal workforce with minimal turnover. 🌳 Richard's approach emphasises nurturing healthy ecosystems for long-term farm viability and the visit was a powerful reminder of the potential for regenerative agriculture to create positive environmental, economic, and social impacts. 🙏 Huge thanks to Richard Cole of Ashbrook Farm, Illovo Sugar Africa, Andrew Cochrane and Chris Fitz-Gerald for introducing us to this best in class example of regenerative agriculture in practice. Thanks also to Maarten de Haan, Anke Kwast, Julia Clark, Dionys Forster #SAIPlatform2024 #PeoplePoweredAgriculture

We're very excited to announce the launch of our first original Lyle's Golden Syrup flapjacks, rolling out across UK supermarkets this month. Flapjacks have long been a popular British treat, harkening back in origin to the 1600s. Since the introduction of Lyle’s Golden Syrup in 1883, our brand has been the key component in homemade flapjack recipes and today it is the number one baked format for the brand. So, it's about time we created some ourselves! Our indulgent ready-to-eat flapjacks; delivering a well-rounded, enticing take on the well-loved British classic. Our flapjacks are gloriously gooey and generous, made with the signature silky-smooth taste of Lyle’s Golden Syrup. Would it be a push to say we're fashionably late? Available now in multipack at Sainsbury's and Ocado Retail. RRP £2.50

A message for our neighbours in Newham regarding emissions this weekend… This weekend at Thames Refinery, we will be restarting and testing the performance of a new gas turbine. From Saturday 15th to Monday 17th June, it is possible that some smoke and fumes may be noticeable coming from Thames Refinery chimneys. This will be temporary, is likely to last a few hours and we will do our best to keep it to an absolute minimum. Specifically, we are testing the turbine operating on its secondary fuel at low power output. The normal, long term operating mode of the equipment will not result in smoke or fumes. The smoke is no cause for alarm, and we are communicating with stakeholders and the local community. Should you need to reach out to us, please visit https://lnkd.in/evYqNbtJ, our dedicated portal for engaging with local residents. Tate & Lyle Sugars works to continually improve our environmental sustainability and performance. In line with this we currently have a major project to upgrade our combustion plant at Thames Refinery including the installation of the new gas turbine. This will reduce emissions and improve air quality for all. This is just one step in an ongoing long-term emissions reduction and sustainability program. Peregrine falcon chicks hatch at Thames Refinery A pair of peregrine falcons made our Thames Refinery their home in spring 2023. Peregrine falcons don’t build traditional birds’ nests. They look for a flat area, high up, and there are currently around 30 nesting pairs on some of London’s tallest buildings. They can reach speeds of up to 200mph, making them the fastest creature on the planet! We are delighted that this year, our nesting pair have hatched three peregrine falcon chicks! They have been checked over and ringed by licensed wildlife experts and we’re pleased to know they are thriving. There are strict environmental regulations that protect these magnificent birds, and we are making sure to give them plenty of space and respect.

Congratulations on your 30th birthday The Fairtrade Foundation! We’ve been big supporters since 2008, when we launched Fairtrade sugar and have generated over £49 million in Fairtrade Premiums for sugarcane farmers and their communities since then. The Report is well worth a read, and highlights one of the many projects Fairtrade producers have done with the Fairtrade Premium that we pay small growers in our supply chain. This time it was training 60 women in financial literacy and small business entrepreneurship in Belize. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eXeUErZY) Learn more about our 15 years of partnership with Fairtrade: https://lnkd.in/eF2G26qg
Today we are hosting an anniversary event with some key changemakers to look back on the last 30 years of the Fairtrade movement in the UK, and to look to the future of Fairtrade together– we need fairer prices, we need more power in the hands of farmers and workers and we need it now. We are calling on businesses, campaigners and the next UK government to address extreme climate challenges and promote fair trade practices. Stay tuned for some highlights from the movement, including Silvia Herrera, Fairtrade Coffee Farmer, Simon Roberts, Sainsbury's CEO and Sandra Uwera, Global CEO, Fairtrade International. #Fairtradeat30 #Fairtrade #ChooseFairtrade

Introducing our latest Trusted By The Best partner, Doh'hut. Specialising in big, hearty, British-style doughnuts - a shop that champions jammy doughnuts. Inspired by the US food truck scene, Doh'hut founder Tom started out making doughnuts in his parent's kitchen before eventually investing in his own food truck. Once on wheels, he quickly became a favourite at many foodie festivals and even won the prestigious British Street Food Awards in 2018! The success allowed Tom to set up Doh'hut's permanent home in his native Leeds, followed by two more bakeries in London (Spitalfields & Exmouth Market)! Focusing on handmade, fluffy and classic flavours, every doughnut is fried to perfection before being hand-rolled in a sweet layer of Tate & Lyle Sugar. Trusted By The Best is our partnership championing the chefs and bakeries who go above and beyond every single day, just like Doh'hut.
