Exploring the Perceived Value of Tea. A Challenge for Café Owners & Operators. As a passionate advocate for both loose leaf tea and the vibrant café culture, I find it intriguing and a bit baffling how we perceive the value of the drinks on the menu. Why is it that a standard teabag offering is average priced at around £2.10, whilst a proper serve of loose leaf tea, with its depth of character and the ritual that comes with the experience, is not valued on par with a latte? Tea isn’t just tea anymore; customers now expect more and demand better experiences. If it meets their expectations, they’ll gladly pay extra and come back for more. Loose leaf tea offers flavours and aromas that rival any expertly crafted coffee. Yet, many café owners hesitate to price it comparably. Let's consider the overheads: water, energy, wages - these are constant across all drinks, whether it's tea, coffee, or any other drink. So, why the disparity in pricing? I challenge owners and operators to rethink how we price and present loose leaf tea. Tea is often neglected on the menu after all the careful consideration given to coffee and food menu. Let's elevate it to its rightful place! After all, the overheads and effort we put into every cup are the same. It’s time to give tea the recognition and value it deserves. Let me know your thoughts on this. How can we bridge the gap in perceived value between tea and coffee in our cafés? What are the hurdles? Would you serve Instant Coffee? Oscar.

This years First Flush Darjeeling has landed. 🍃 Harvested on April 2nd 2024 from the historic Bannockburn Tea Garden in the Himalayas. First Flush is made from the finest fresh spring tea leaves. Its greenish, stylish appearance is complemented by a few silver tips. With a fresh citrus aroma and a taste that combines light citrus and apricot notes, this tea offers a mellow, crisp, and fruity cup with subtle honey undertones. There’s a good reason this tea is also known as the ‘Champagne of Tea’ 🍾 https://ow.ly/3ktP50RSo84

Happy International Tea Day. What is your favourite tea and why? Annette: Belfast Brew – It’s a proper cup of tea! Patrick: Rooibos Organic – It reminds me of my childhood. Julie: Spiced Citrus – Every day is Christmas when drinking this. James: Darjeeling 1st Flush. Because it’s simply the best. I look forward to it every spring. Rachel: Ginseng is my winner as it’s so refreshing. Sarah: Rooibos Crème Brulee as it’s the most relaxing night time tea, great with hot milk. Oscar: Matcha – The tea equivalent of an espresso. I love it with apple juice and lime this time of year. Annie: Genmaicha for it’s unique toasty nutty quality. #whatisyourfavouritetea #sukitea #teafaves #mybesttea #tealove #teastagram #teatime #teaparty #teaculture

We believe in the importance of providing platforms where students can grow and excel. This week, we say farewell & good luck to Evan Robinson who’s off on his travels and then returning to final year at Queen’s Uni, Belfast to complete his BSc in Food Safety, Quality and Nutrition. Evan joined us for a year work placement and with his thirst for learning, energy and enthusiasm, he soon became a valued member of the team. He was quickly trained up in all things tea, auditing and inspection, New Product Development and our Quality Management systems and hit the ground running as an integral team member. With his ‘can do’ attitude he contributed greatly to all our projects and improved systems, displaying excellent strategic and leadership skills. As Evan wraps up his placement, he shares, "I thoroughly enjoyed my year at Suki Tea. Annie, Oscar, and the rest of the team helped me feel at home from the start. The skills and experience I gained will be useful whatever I choose to do next!" Evan, you will be dearly missed. Thank you for your incredible contributions and best of luck in your future endeavours! Oscar, Annie & The SUKI TEAm. ❤️ (Images) Brave Journey: Evan competing next to reigning Tea Tasting Champion Diana Farr del Rio in last years competition Caffe Culture in London.
