Stonewall was founded in 1989 by a small group of people who wanted to break down barriers to equality. Stonewall continues to campaign and lobby government to change laws to ensure everyone, everywhere, is free to be themselves. Stonewall works in partnership with a growing network of more than 700 organisations to help create real change for the better. It campaigns to eliminate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in communities, and empowers LGBT people and their allies to be role models wherever they live, work, shop, socialise or pray. Today marks 55 years since the Stonewall uprising – the moment from which we are proud to take our name! 🌈 The uprising in 1969 showed us that when we stand together, we can create real change. Over half a century later, we are proud to continue the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. In the UK, we’re facing another crucial point in history – a general election, in less than a week. Our latest research with Impact Culture (2023) shows that we do not feel safe to live our lives freely. Less than half of LGBTQ+ people would feel safe holding their partner’s hand in public (44%). This is a pivotal moment for our community. We need the next Prime Minister & UK Govt to stand hand in hand with the community, and get us back on track.
