  • A new report released this week by the National Police Chiefs’ Council calls violence against women and girls a national emergency. The report shows that VAWG has risen by nearly 40% over 5 years. Our CEO Cherryl Henry-Leach responds: “The NPCC estimates that 1 in 12 women in England and Wales would be a victim of violence every year (about 2 million women). This is just a fraction of the number of women who are affected by acts of misogyny and abuse. Too many feel afraid, judged or ashamed to report it. Standing Together agrees that violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a national emergency. We can no longer allow the system to fail women. With VAWG rising by 37% in the last 5 years, our sector needs adequate investment to reach people affected by violence and abuse, particularly those who are vulnerable and marginalised. We call for this report to be seen as a driver that takes the conversation to direct action. This requires a whole system approach that is immediate and effective in working towards the new government's aims to at least halve VAWG. This must include: - A coordinated multi-agency approach that incorporates specialist services to support victim-survivors. - Increased training and education. In the report, 1 in 20 adults are cited as perpetrators of VAWG every year, with VAWG accounting for 20% of all crimes recorded by the police. Prevention and early intervention are essential if we are to truly tackle abusive behaviours before they escalate. There is much work to do, and we are Standing Together with our partners in the call for urgent action now and in the immediate future." Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/danf5ujR

  • We are heartened to hear the new Government's commitment to halve Violence Against and Women and Girls in the King's Speech yesterday. Our CEO Cherryl Henry-Leach responds to Labour's statement with a call for a whole system approach to effectively create positive change, including: - A clear delivery plan that keeps the safety of victims and survivors central to its development.  - Investment in the sector so that vital support provided by specialist organisations is sustained.  - Access to Justice will not re-traumatise victim-survivors and they experience trauma-informed support at every stage from disclosure - Improvements to the NHS include a Coordinated Community Response to health and domestic abuse. - Expectation that all education settings respond appropriately to domestic abuse and actively promote and teach healthy relationships. - Reduce homelessness, recognising domestic abuse as a lead cause, whilst protecting survivors and guaranteeing victims' rights. • Domestic Abuse is a whole system issue. Our Crossing Pathways Project funded by the Home Office, is leading the way in transforming the health response to violence and abuse. We have commissioned 30 services and programmes nationwide to bring about real change, and a Coordinated Community Response. We are delighted to have supported the implementation of the IRISi Interventions gold standard model in Sefton, Halton and Herefordshire, to improve clinical practice and better support patients. This proactive approach is essential in regions with an older demographic and isolated communities, where enhanced support mechanisms are crucial. The programme's impact is already evident in the improved ability of clinicians to identify and refer victims. Dr. Wendy Elizabeth Hewitt, Sefton's Named Safeguarding GP, states "We are seeing a much greater awareness of domestic abuse among our primary care colleagues, leading to increased clinical inquiry and professional curiosity, and ensuring consistent identification and assessment of risk." Read more about the project and its impact in IRISi's blog post 👇

  • The new Government is formed and today we sent a letter to the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting MP signed by 16 organisations, setting out our urgent call to support domestic abuse and VAWG (violence against women and girls) victims/survivors and their children in health settings. We have outlined 4 priorities with our key recommendations to transform the health response to domestic abuse: 1. Sustainable long-term funding for domestic abuse initiatives within all health settings. 2. Ongoing training, learning and development for health professionals on domestic abuse alongside protected time for health professionals to undertake this. 3. Building a coordinated community resonse to health and domestic abuse through partnership working with health, domestic abuse services, 'by and for' services and wider multiagency safeguarding stakeholders. 4. Clear methods of data recording, monitoring, sharing and including clinical coding for domestic abuse. Domestic abuse should be top of their agenda because: 80% of women experiencing domestic abuse seek help from health services Domestic abuse annually costs the NHS an estimated £2.3 billion Most importantly, it will save lives. Action needs to happen now. Read the full letter on our website at https://lnkd.in/eHz278z5 Sources: Gov.uk | NICE 2023
