Life with Angelman Syndrome

About us

We are a UK registered charity (1201650) focus on supporting families with Angelman Syndrome, funding research and providing opportunities for physical activity for the Angelman community. Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic condition affecting around 1 in 15,000 people, about 500,000 in the world. It affects the nervous system causing severe physical and learning disabilities, little or no speech and issues with movement and balance. A person with Angelman will have near normal life expectancy, but they will require support throughout their life. AS is caused by one of several different types of disruptions of a region of Chromosome 15, all involving a single gene, UBE3A. AS was given its name by a British paediatrician, Harry Angelman, who first identified it in 1965. At first, little was known of the disorder and few other cases were identified. During the 1980s advances in genetic medicine made it possible to diagnose increasing numbers of cases and also to start identifying the cause. The name Angelman Syndrome was adopted in 1982. Most children with Angelman will be able to communicate using gestures, signs or other systems and may have a few words. They have difficulty walking because of poor balance and co-ordination. Seizures, feeding difficulties and poor sleep patterns are all a common feature of Angelman. The most endearing feature though, is their frequent smiling and laughing.

The Safety Sleeper 💤 We are so happy that Leo finally has a safe, secure and comfortable bed! Meaning we too can finally sleep knowing that he is not going to climb out of his cot and hurt himself. After a long battle with the services to help provide him with a safe sleeping space at night (that wasn’t just a mattress on the floor) they finally agreed to get The Safety Sleeper for us. For anyone looking for a safe space at night, we would definitely recommend looking at this option. It comes in a lovely 4-wheel suitcase, with a very easy set up. It has an air-mattress which is perfect for travelling and additional coverlets to protect your mattress. All zips are secured from the outside, it has breathable netting and can either sit on the floor or be secured onto a bed frame. Perfect for at home use and travel, associating the space with SLEEP! At the moment we have positioned the bed on the floor to try and help Leo transition himself in and out of the bed. This is great for his development and he already knows how to pull himself up into bed. As you can see, he loves it and so do we! We used @murrays.ie so check them out if you’re looking. Here’s to a great nights sleep….🤞🏼 #thesafetysleeper #safesleep #sleep #safeandsecure #angelmansyndrome

HOLLYWOOD CALLING 🎥 We are soooo excited to share with you a special video from the amazingly talented actor, Colin Farrell 💙 When this landed in our inbox, we couldn’t believe it! For those of you who don’t know, Colin also has a son with Angelman Syndrome. Since James was diagnosed, Colin has been a massive advocate for AS. “The struggles of a child with special needs can be so brutal that they can tear at the very fabric of your heart, but the love shared and the pure strength and heroism observed is the needle and thread that mends all tears,” - _Colin_ Thank you so much for the beautiful message, we truly appreciate it and hope that one day Leo can meet Colin and James 🧡
