The Labour Party has committed to introducing significant reforms to the non-dom tax status from 6 April 2025, as outlined in their first non-dom policy paper which was released this week. While the paper doesn’t offer many new details, it reinforces the government’s determination to eliminate the regime entirely, with the detailed rules set to be revealed on 30 October 2024 as part of the Autumn Budget. Over the past week, I gained experience at Simmons Gainsford Group where I had the chance to complete accounting tasks throughout the week. Initially, I learnt and conducted bank analysis, first on the business account of the CEO of a multinational private membership club (which operates across Europe, America and Asia), where I first learnt how to analyse and group the spendings of the CEO. I utilised this knowledge by conducting another bank analysis on a Sussex based Farm, consolidating knowledge as well as completing a balance sheet on the same farm. Later on in the week, I had my first experience in auditing where I accomplished both a sales testing process and a purchases test across various firms and their spendings, verifying their nominal ledgers and analysing the necessity of their spendings as well as correcting any mistakes they may have made in their nominal ledgers. Lastly, I performed preliminary research due diligence on a parent company and all their subsidiaries, (of which consisted of both dormant and active companies) where I collected data from their annual accounting reports from the Companies House and recorded their various factors such as their assets, turnover and profit/loss accounts. Overall, I’d like to thank Simmons Gainsford for allowing me to have this engaging experience where I learnt many key skills used in accounting and was able to apply them in real cases that the firm had taken on, as well as the chance for me to build on my knowledge of using Excel. I would especially like to thank my supervisor, for all of his support and feedback along with everyone else at the firm who made me feel comfortable and inviting throughout my time there.
