Today is #EarthOvershootDay - the day we’ve used up all the natural resources our 🌍 can generate for 2024. That means humanity is using nature 1⃣.7⃣ times faster than our planet can regenerate. To sustain our current rate of consumption we would need 1.7 Earths. But ending overshoot is possible. From clean energy to nature restoration and circularity, the 🇪🇺 #EUGreenDeal aims to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and halt biodiversity loss. You can also help #MoveTheDate. In the fight against climate change, acknowledging its unequal impacts is key to crafting effective solutions. Women, often disproportionately affected by climate change due to social and economic factors, play a vital role in shaping inclusive strategies. 💡Here are four reasons why women are indispensable allies in the fight for a climate-resilient future. Why do you think it’s crucial to involve women in climate action efforts, and how do you believe their participation can positively impact our response to the climate crisis? #SHEChangesClimate #WomenInClimate #ClimateAction

DEEP SEABED MINING : ELECTION TIME This week, at International Seabed Authority HQ, Kingston, Jamaica, 168 nations negotiating rules governing deep-sea mining face a critical vote that could impact the nascent industry for years: election of its next leader. There are two candidates: Leticia Carvalho, sponsored by Brazil, is running against the current secretary general, Michael Lodge, a British lawyer, sponsored by Kiribati, a small Pacific state. He has been accused of being an partisan interested party in furthering Deep Seabed Mining* "Calls for a pause on exploitation of the seabed are intensifying, with 27 nations now arguing there is not enough data to begin mining. If deep-sea mining goes ahead, scientists warn of large-scale, severe and irreversible harm to global ocean ecosystems that are already threatened by the climate and biodiversity crises." There are also strong arguments against the economic benefit of DSM (Nickel mines are closing and prices for Cobalt have dropped 30%) "During his eight-year tenure, Lodge has been accused of closeness to the mining industry, overstepping his neutral role and of presiding over an authority that lacks transparency. A New York Times piece published earlier this month also accused him of pushing countries to accelerate the start of deep-sea mining. He denies these claims. (see links in comments below) Carvalho, a Brazilian oceanographer and international diplomat, says it is time for “meaningful transformation” at the ISA. “The current deep divide of views among the state parties in the council is heavily due to the lack of trust and leadership, on top of whatever scientific gaps we may have or asymmetry of knowledge between members.” One firm, The Metals Company, based in Canada, and partnered with the Pacific states of Nauru, Tonga and Kiribati, has said it will apply for permission to mine later this year, before rules and regulations are likely to be in place. Carvalho claims it is 𝙇𝙤𝙙𝙜𝙚’𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢. Trust, she claims, began to ebb away in 2018 after the secretary general appeared in a video wearing a hard hat with a “DeepGreen” logo on it. (TMC's former name). “What is intriguing is the leadership of a multilateral organisation embracing one company’s demands, pushing it into the ISA council’s process to develop a mining code,” she says. The New York Times investigation featured an admission from the ambassador of Kiribati, Teburoro Tito, who confirmed that he attempted to persuade Carvalho to drop out of the race by offering her a possible high-level staff job at the agency. https://lnkd.in/eKn7QQ6w *https://lnkd.in/eQCf4bTf SHE Changes Climate

It’s time for wealthy countries to #PayUp!💰 The Global North has an incalculable climate debt owed to the Global South.  It is for this reason that under the #PayUp campaign banner, an array of civil society groups from trade unions, to youth and climate networks, women and gender organisations, are demanding the Global North to clear the climate debt owed to the Global South. This call to action holds great promise for tangible solutions that respect the needs and dignity of people facing life in extreme heat. It is critical that actions prioritize the health and livelihoods of women, as they physically, culturally, and financially bear a bigger share of the brutal brunt of heat.“ SHE Changes Climate fully endorses the call for action and re-emphasises the need to focus on vulnerable communities, especially women. #ExtremeHeat #ClimateChange

🌍📢 UN Sec. General Guterres Announces a Global Call to Action on Extreme Heat! 📢🌍 Climate Resilience for All is proud to be a part of and support the UN Secretary-General's urgent call to address the severe impacts of extreme heat, particularly on women and vulnerable communities. We commend the leadership of Sec. General António Guterres and the United Nations agencies that helped make this happen.    Our CEO, Kathy Baughman McLeod said, “As an organization focused on addressing extreme heat for women and vulnerable communities, we are grateful to see the recognition of the massive scale of the draining and deadly effects of extreme heat – especially for the poor and  climate-blameless.    This call to action holds great promise for tangible solutions that respect the needs and dignity of people facing life in extreme heat. It is critical that actions prioritize the health and livelihoods of women, as they physically, culturally, and financially bear a bigger share of the brutal brunt of heat.“     Please find the official collection of global and community leaders’ endorsements and reactions to today’s first-ever global declaration on extreme heat on our website here: https://lnkd.in/gKdsWT9Q     Selwin Hart, Rachel Kyte, Emma Howard Boyd CBE, Jessica Brown, Jess Ayers, Masatsugu Asakawa ADB, Eamon Ryan, Izabella Monica Teixeira (She/Her), Razan Al Mubarak, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, Mahmoud Mohieldin, Nigel Topping, CMG, Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir CMG , Jeff Goodell, Mamta Borgoyary, Laura Clarke OBE, Professor Lord Nicholas Stern, Veronica Scotti, Julie Arrighi, Ritu Bharadwaj, Karim Elgendy   📢 The Call to Action in short:  The UN Secretary-General's Call to Action on Extreme Heat brings together the diverse expertise and perspectives of ten specialized UN entities (FAO, ILO, OCHA, UNDRR, UNEP, UNESCO, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, WHO, WMO) in a first-of-its-kind joint product, underscoring the multi-sectoral impacts of extreme heat.    Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere. Billions of people around the world are wilting under increasingly severe heatwaves driven largely by a fossil fuel-charged, human-induced climate crisis. Extreme heat is tearing through economies, widening inequalities, undermining the Sustainable Development Goals, and killing people.     The Call for Action calls for an urgent and concerted effort to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in four critical areas: Caring for the vulnerable - Protecting workers - Boosting the resilience of economies and societies using data and science - Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy.    Watch the briefing here: https://lnkd.in/gGc86ZCs   #ExtremeHeat #WomenInClimate #ClimateResilience #ClimateAction #ActNow

Enabling Disaster Resilient Cities to achieve Sustainable Development Earlier this month, SHE Changes Climate was invited to engage in a Trainer of Trainers workshop, guided by this topic, at the Miranda House College at Delhi University. Our Executive Director Mamta Borgoyary and India Lead Coordinator Dr. Chetana Naskar (PhD) participated in the workshop, with Mamta leading a powerful discussion on the 'Importance of Gendered Narrative in Climate Change and DRR', where she highlighted: — the glaring statistics of the unequal impact of climate-related disasters on women, both within India and globally; — the severe effects of heat waves and heat stress on women's health, which increase health risks and mortality rates; and emphasized — that to achieve gender-inclusive climate action, we need more women in leadership positions, bringing their perspectives and experiences into decision-making processes, and greater consultation with women during planning and policy-making. Dr. Chetana added a crucial perspective on how marginalized women, who already live in extremely vulnerable conditions in cities, face increased hardships due to climate-induced events. She cited the example of homeless women and children in Delhi who experience extreme difficulties during severe heat and rain seasons. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Urban Studies and Research Centre (USRC), the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). #SHEChangesClimate #SustainableDevelopment #ResilientCities #WomenInLeadership #GenderEquality #ClimateAction

The Matriarchs of Resilience Despite the prolonged drought that has recently shaken the lives and livelihoods of many living in the Horn of Africa, pastoralist communities like the Maasai in Kenya continue to slowly adapt to the current times. It’s not easy, particularly for the women, whose increased care work leaves them without enough time to earn a living. In a bid to pay homage to the unsung heroes of this vibrant community, two Maasai women have taken a bold stride beyond the confines of traditional expectations, and instead picked up cameras to show the lives of the Matriarchs nurturing resilient Maasai people. What came of this pursuit was a photo exhibition, launched in Nairobi last week. Learn more about the Matriarchs of Resilience project and the team of women behind its success: https://lnkd.in/dskgiNVF 📸 Sarah Nyakio
