Call for papers: Reinventing Space is a conference and exhibition, organised by the British Interplanetary Society, dedicated to advancing humanity’s future capabilities in space and highlights the trends that will define space enterprise a decade from now. The conference will take place in London on 11-13 November at the Royal Aeronautical Society, 4 Hamilton Place, London. The theme of this year's conference is ‘The Commercial Revolution’ and will focus on the key benefits and emerging issues presented by the rapidly growing number of space missions and activities driven by increasing commercial activity: “A significant change in the utilisation of Near-Earth Space is underway, resulting from the launches of very large numbers of commercial satellites. The Reinventing Space Conference in 2024 will focus on the likely implications of this revolution over the next two decades; not only for the manufacturers and operators of the satellites themselves, but also for the legal, logistical, educational, and space surveillance communities which support them” The second day, Tuesday 12 November, will incorporate the ‘Beyond The Moon Symposium’, which will explore the “longer-term possibilities, critical challenges and key stepping stones required for the future exploration and development of space” Call for papers will close at midnight on Wednesday 31 July 2024 For further information, please visit https://ow.ly/K05C50SFZKg

👏 We are pleased to share that our research associate Benjamin Herrmann recently presented his paper titled "Flight Testing of Real-Time Model Predictive Flight Control for Unmanned Flexible Aircraft" at the 2024 CEAS - Council of European Aerospace Societies Conference on Guidance, Navigation, and Control (#EuroGNC) hosted by the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, with the support of the Royal Aeronautical Society (#RAeS). 💡 In this work, a model predictive flight controller for a slightly flexible 25 kg unmanned aircraft is proposed, implemented in real-time, and validated through flight test experiments. The controller stabilizes the aircraft and tracks reference commands by computing optimal control surface inputs for the 11 control surfaces of the aircraft. Aeroelastic effects are considered in the predictions, and real-time feasibility of the controller is achieved by using orthonormal Laguerre functions to reduce the number of decision variables in the optimization problem. The flight test results show a very good performance of the controller and provide valuable in-flight data on the use of MPC in flight control. The development of efficient control systems for flexible aircraft is a significant contribution to enabling future climate-neutral aircraft with increased aerodynamic performance and reduced structural weight. To this end, the #FST is investigating advanced control methods such as MPC, which can integrate multiple control objectives and improve the flight control performance. ✈ Many thanks for a great conference with interesting technical sessions and an exciting social program.
