We partner with universities, start-ups and other companies to find better ways to develop the technology we need, so we can run safer, more efficient mines. Through our partnership with the University of Sydney, we're leveraging industry expertise and world class research to develop innovative remote operation technologies, such as the DIPPeR™ robot. We are committed to finding new and better ways to decarbonize the aluminium value chain. A challenge of this scale requires an intentional approach and ground breaking innovation.   Today, we announced an important next step in our ELYSIS joint venture with Alcoa, the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec.   The ELYSIS™ technology will help us eliminate carbon emissions in the smelting process, a major challenge for us at Rio Tinto. We will deploy and continue to trial on a larger scale the technology at our Arvida smelter in the Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec. For more details on the announcement, I have included a link to the media release in the comments section. I’d like to thank everyone involved, including our partners, people and teams in Saguenay and Voreppe, France who have played an integral role in this milestone.   #FindingBetterWays #Aluminium

"I started working at Diavik shortly after it started production in 2005.... Today, I am proud to have been an important contributor to the successful mining project at Diavik as it moves towards the end of operations in 2026 and enters closure," Kari, principal resource geologist at Diavik, says. "Over the years, there have been many opportunities to improve the way we do things and solve problems. Whenever I can, I encourage maximising the value of the ore we extract. This approach takes persistence, but this is truly sustainable mining. Women are underrepresented in technical fields. It is something I have seen throughout my career. To address it, the simple answer is more women need to be hired in technical roles." 👉 Read about some of the incredible women in science at Rio Tinto : https://lnkd.in/eCcQXUD2

Did you know? The average car today uses about 60% more aluminium than it did just 10 years ago. Aluminium is making cars lighter than ever before, thanks to its incredible strength-to-weight ratio. This means less fuel used and a smaller carbon footprint for your car. On episode 5 of Things You Can't Live Without, we dive deeper into how aluminium is revolutionising the automotive industry. The latest global estimates indicate there are currently 50 million victims of modern slavery, which includes 12 million children in forced labour. We believe respecting human rights and eliminating modern slavery is a collective responsibility across our business. We've released our 2023 Modern Slavery Statement which highlights the steps we are taking to identify and address modern slavery risks throughout our global business and supply chains. Some of the things we did in 2023: ✔ 5759 due diligence reviews (up from 4122 in 2022). ✔ 489 marine vessel inspections. ✔ Improved awareness and identification of modern slavery-related risks. ✔ Increased awareness of child labour risks in our supply chain. ✔ Collaborated with peers, civil society and other stakeholders for greater impact. Read the statement to find out more 👇 #FindingBetterWays #ModernSlaveryStatement
