Together with the other UK Higher Education funding bodies, we’re pleased to confirm the institutions taking part in the People, Culture and Environment (PCE) pilot exercise for REF 2029. These include institutions from across the whole of the UK and that give a broad range of different submission sizes, breadth of provision and experience of participation in previous REF exercises. More details here: https://lnkd.in/ekZdBMzT We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the institutions who took the time to express their interest in joining the pilot. Applications are now open to join the REF 2029 Advisory Panels. REF 2029 will deliver an expanded definition of research excellence, recognising the wide range of research, roles and people that are essential to the vitality of the UK’s vibrant research system. In REF 2029, two advisory panels will support these aims: 🔸 People and Diversity Advisory Panel (PDAP) (approx. 10 members) 🔸 Research Diversity Advisory Panel (RDAP) (approx. 10 members) Advisory panels have played an important part in the development and delivery of the REF, which is delivered by the four UK Higher Education funding bodies*. These panels will: 🔸 Advise the REF Steering Group on the development and delivery of the exercise, acting as critical friends 🔸 Advise on the development of REF 2029 assessment criteria and the delivery of assessment 🔸 Contribute to the REF 2029 assessment process More details on the role requirements, benefits of taking part and how to apply can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dKW6jeMB You have until midday on 24 June 2024 to submit your application. * The four UK Higher Education funding bodies are Research England, Scottish Funding Council, Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) - Cyngor Cyllido Addysg Uwch Cymru (CCAUC) and Department for the Economy NI #REF2029

“The REF has always been a shared endeavour with the sector and our focus continues to be co-developing the REF 2029 exercise with the research community.” writes our Head of Research Assessment Policy, Duncan Shermer. “We outlined opportunities to 'join the journey' in a recent HEPI blog and applications for HEIs to participate has recently closed. We have now opened the opportunity for applications for individuals to participate as pilot panel members. For both of these opportunities we are seeking the broadest possible representation of people, experience, knowledge and background to give us the best possible insight into the assessment of PCE within the REF. “We want to understand how the assessment of PCE could work within the REF exercise and we know that this is not something that can be a one-size-fits-all approach.” Yesterday we shared an update on the PCE pilot for the next REF exercise – the launch of applications for people to take part in the pilot as a member of an assessment panel. As part of our* commitment to co-design the next REF exercise with the research community, we’re pleased to share that applications are now open to join the People, Culture and Environment (PCE) pilot as a member of an assessment panel. We’re looking for a broad representation of people, experience, knowledge and background in our pilot panels to gain the best possible insight into assessing PCE within REF. We welcome applications from people who meet one or more of these criteria: 🔍 Experience of research assessment, for example served on a REF panel or other national assessment exercise 🔍 Experience of research submissions, for example coordinated an institutional or unit-level submission for the REF 2021 exercise 🔍 General expertise in PCE, for example an institutional role focusing on a field related to research culture, or involved in other groups or organisations with an active interest in PCE We’re at an exploratory stage with the assessment of PCE and we need to find out what skills and experience are most pertinent to the assessment. In addition to experience relevant to the running of pilot panels and understanding of the impact of research culture, we want to know what else will be important to the robust assessment of PCE. Please tell us your views on this in the application form – there is space in the form for you to outline any additional expertise you will bring to the panel. More details on the role requirements, benefits of taking part and how to apply can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e-vfGUjd Applications open until midday on 12 July *The four UK Higher Education funding bodies: Research England, Scottish Funding Council, Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) - Cyngor Cyllido Addysg Uwch Cymru (CCAUC) and Department for the Economy NI. #REF2029

Supporting a transition towards Open Access for all disciplines is a priority for the Higher Education Funding Bodies*. The ongoing consultation on open access policy for REF 2029 includes a proposal for long-form research outputs and we know this has raised concerns, especially within the arts, humanities and social science communities. We are committed to adapting the approach to open access in response to the input and evidence received in the consultation, and you can help shape the open access policy for the next REF by taking part in the consultation. We're working with HESA: Higher Education Statistics Agency, Jisc and the Policy Evidence Unit for University Commercialisation & Innovation (UCI) to improve spinout data. This data is crucial to help inform future investment cases, as well as how universities can contribute even more to national success. As an important first milestone in our partnership, HESA recently launched a consultation on development of a national spinout register. Read our guest blog on The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) for more on the importance of this data, challenges to consider and the next steps on this journey: https://orlo.uk/ZTNDr #KnowledgeExchange #commercialisation #spinouts
