News announcement: the REA has appointed Trevor Hutchings (FIEMA, DipIoD, CertIoD) as its new Chief Executive. Trevor will join the Association on July 1st. He succeeds Nina Skorupska CBE FEI who is standing down after more than 10 years in post. Trevor’s immediate priority will be to press the incoming Government to put the #energytransition and #netzero front and centre of its legislative programme. The REA has urged all UK political parties to promote and commit to policies that support #sustainableenergy growth, #lowcarbon #innovation, and the country’s legally binding net zero carbon #emissions targets. Trevor joins from BIP, where he was Partner for Sustainability. His career has been shaped across the public, private and NGO sectors in multiple roles supporting #cleanenergy development, net zero, the #environment and #climateaction. Biogas can play a significant role in the future UK energy system with technologies that are already well established. The REA Biogas steering group welcomes the new The Labour Party government and has set out a comprehensive action plan that will ensure resilient, longstanding support for the biogas sector. The REA’s Biogas steering Group is part of the REA Green Gas Forum, which has worked incessantly to overcome barriers to the development and operation of green gas plants and help shape Government policy to support green gases. We've set out what we believe are 5 key steps to kick-starting a viable market for green gas, enabling it to play a significant role in the decarbonisation of heat and transport, and supporting a circular economy in agriculture. https://lnkd.in/emzgChwz #Biogas #GreenGas #UKETS #AnaerobicDigestion

The REA welcomes the appointment of Chris Stark as Head of Mission Control for Clean Power. The establishment of the centre puts the ambitious 2030 target at the centre of the new Government's focus on delivering a low carbon and secure energy system. We are pleased to see such an experienced energy expert take up the role. The new organisation will need to urgently get to grips with the major barriers currently slowing the deployment of renewables and clean technologies, including turbocharging efforts to address the time taken to connect new low carbon generation to the grid; reforming planning guidance to ensure new generation can be built, and providing confidence to enable reinvestment in existing low carbon assets as they come to the end of their existing contract arrangements. The REA and our members look forward to working closely with Chris as the new Mission Control centre gets underway. #cleanenergy #2030 #missioncontrolforcleanpower #renewableenergy

Welcome news in quick succession for UK clean energy and decarbonisation, as Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves announces the launch of a £7.3bn national wealth fund to support exciting projects across port infrastructure, gigafactories, EVs, and carbon capture and green hydrogen, following yesterday’s announcement on the removal of the offshore wind ban in England. At the REA we recognise that, backed with the right supporting policy regime, private capital will be key to helping to overcome some of the key barriers to UK net zero projects. #renewableenergy #ukcleanenergy #ukports #infrastructure #CCUS #greenhydrogen #electricvehicles https://lnkd.in/erYHwVfb

The REA welcomes The Labour Party's victory. Together with our members, we want to help the UK transition to a 100% #renewableenergy and #cleantechnology system by 2050, ensuring our sector can contribute to the Government’s energy goals and to meet our #netzero targets. The REA stands ready to support Labour’s new ministerial teams to overcome the policy blockages that are derailing the UK’s ability to meet these targets. Trevor Hutchings (FIEMA, DipIoD, CertIoD), our Chief Executive: “We’re pleased to see an incoming Labour administration committed to #cleangrowth and energy #decarbonisation. We would encourage Sir Keir and his team to galvanise a sector that can boost the UK economy and achieve his target of the highest growth in the G7." "Investing in our sector can mitigate against rising #energycosts, improve #energysecurity, create jobs and growth, improve international competitiveness and help address climate change." "The REA is challenging Labour to be bold and quickly seize this opportunity.” Our full statement: https://lnkd.in/e86JxuD5

We're publishing a series of reports into different aspects of UK energy. This report considers #geothermal energy: what it is, the state of Deep Geothermal in the UK, and key policy recommendations to see the sector grow. To accelerate the growth of Deep Geothermal in the UK, we would like the incoming government take steps to: • develop a Deep Geothermal Strategy, which sets out national targets for #heat and #power, and the policies and funding mechanisms that will enable industry to deliver these targets. • deliver a Geothermal Development Incentive by the end of 2025, targeted at shovel-ready geothermal heat projects, to get the sector established in the UK. • review and amend existing financial support mechanisms so they better support routes to market for geothermal e.g., by ringfencing the Contracts for Difference budget for geothermal projects or reconfiguring the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to deliver strategically important geothermal projects, such as NHS sites that require high heat loads. Our report can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/eBdhRRXz

Ambitious climate and environmental policy must be at the heart of the next government's agenda. The right approach will drive growth across the UK, improve energy security, and lower bills. Businesses recognise this, now we need to see further policies in place to enable them to accelerate their efforts. We're looking forward to discussing this crucial issue with experts from politics and civil society at our upcoming pre-election event on Thursday 27 June from 5pm. Join us as we hear from John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben, Baroness Young of Old Scone, and Nina Skorupska CBE FEI as part of a panel chaired by Pilita Clark.
