In the King's Speech the Government recently announced plans to strengthen borders and modernise the Asylum and Immigration System. While these measures aim at border security, we believe it's crucial to address the chaos in the asylum system. People fleeing war-torn countries deserve fair hearings and swift decisions. Children’s rights need to be at the forefront of government policy. We are delighted to support the Children’s Rights Charter from @CRAE_official, joining nearly 90 organisations in urging the new UK Government to take decisive action to protect and prioritise children’s rights. Our collective voice calls for a children's rights strategy; the appointment of a Cabinet Minister for Children; mandatory child rights impact assessments; increased budget allocations for children; a strategy for increasing awareness, knowledge and understanding of children's rights; and incorporation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into domestic law. We must ensure that children’s rights are at the heart of policymaking and that every child can thrive. 🔗 Read our recommendations here: https://bit.ly/3LqBOE0 #UNCRC #ChildRights

The devastating news today of yet further loss of life in the Channel highlights critical task facing our new Government to prevent these tragic deaths. People fleeing conflict and oppression, from countries like Afghanistan, Syria and Iran, are being driven into arms of smuggling gangs daily. Opening up SAFE ROUTES for people to find safety without taking deadly journeys, would bring an end to this. Our new Government has a golden opportunity to achieve this. Through cooperation agreements with our European allies and trialling use of refugee visas. We are not pretending this is a quick fix. BUT over time, with the right mix of policies, we CAN stop these horrifying, needless deaths. We stand ready to support our new Government to make this happen.

The big question for many people today is, who will progress to the semi-finals this evening? Like many fans across the country, we will have our eyes glued to the TV for tonight's #EURO2024 quarter-finals! When playing in an international tournament, like the Euro's, the love of football unifies the players and the fans, and host nations welcome huge amounts of people from across the world as guests in their towns and cities. At its best football inspires a welcome with open arms and integrates cultures and communities, be it across fan groups or within the teams they support. And this got us thinking... are there players who have been forced to flee their home countries and had to rebuild their life elsewhere? As we cheer for our teams tonight, let’s also celebrate the incredible stories of players who have overcome so much to perform at the highest level. Their stories remind us of the power of sport and community to welcome, unite, inspire, and create positive change. As you can see, we found an amazing 7-a-side team, but are there any footballers with a refugee background we have missed? Let us know in the comments! #Sports #Football

“The newly elected Labour government has a golden opportunity to fix our chaotic, costly and dysfunctional asylum system once and for all.” It's time to scrap the Rwanda plan, repeal the Illegal Migration Act, and restore the right to asylum. Processing asylum claims quickly and fairly will end the indefinite limbo too many refugees are in, shut out of the asylum system. Expanding safe routes such as family reunion, resettlement, and refugee visas will reduce dangerous Channel crossings. Above all, the new Government must reset the Home Office culture to ensure compassion and support for refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, and Sudan

Children are suffering in our broken asylum system - it’s a safeguarding crisis on a huge scale. We work with hundreds of refugee children like Jamal* who are wrongly sent to adult accommodation where they are at risk of exploitation and abuse. Jamal's* story is just 1 of many of children and young people who have been incorrectly assessed leading to them being sent to an adult hotel. Investing in a National Refugee Strategy and commencing a review of rights and protections would create a system that is safe and fair for children and young people who come to our shores after escaping war, discrimination and abuse.
