Donald Trump, former president of the United States of America (USA) and Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, stated during a long press conference that he begins to “agree a lot more” with the legalization of cannabis, since the use of the plant is becoming increasingly legal in more states across the country, according to the Marijuana Moment. More and more countries are legalising and regulating their recreational cannabis markets using Transform's expertise. It's time the UK caught up. This is why we are launching a crowdfunder to raise £50,000 to support our work. With your donation, we will be able to run a major UK’s campaign for cannabis reform. Partner at Fieldfisher LLP - Life Sciences Regulation (Healthcare, Plant-Based Therapies, Vaping, Food/Agri-Tech and Regulated Substances)

Earlier this month, the Care Quality Commission released its Annual Update on 'The Safer Management of Controlled Drugs'. The data therein relates to the calendar year 2023, and there were a number of relevant announcements in respect of CBPMs in the UK, which I've summarised below: 1.     "At the time of publishing, 22 providers that prescribe unlicensed CBPMs were registered with CQC" (p18). 2.     There's a grumble about the clinics being slow to update GPs and other relevant HCP's on treatment plans and products prescribed (p18). 3.     CQC data shows an increase of 118% in terms of "items dispensed" from June 2022 to June 2023 (p19). 4.     "Some non-medical prescribers can prescribe CBPMs under the direction of the specialist doctor. We have seen that most of the non-medical prescribing for CBPMs is undertaken by pharmacist independent prescribers, who work in clinics in the capacity of shared care with specialist doctors" (p20) – very interesting given the shortage of specialist doctors currently willing to prescribe. 5.     "The number of unlicensed CBPMs prescribed each year continues to increase by at least 100% annually. A multi-agency review of the impact of this change would be beneficial" (p20). 6.     "The intention for this change was to support treatment for individual patients for an unmet clinical need. We have since seen a significant increase in prescribing to treat a wide range of medical conditions, as well as changing models of care including those involving non-medical prescribers" (p62). I am of course delighted to see the sector growing in this way, but one suspects the CQC, MHRA, and Home Office might not necessarily take the same view. The request for a "multi-agency review" suggests we may be reaching a tipping point where the regulators will start taking a keener interest in the sector, and there are some 'lax' practices which have already been noted. Aggressive marketing and innovative prescribing structures appear to be having the desired impact of growing patient numbers, but it is essential that clinic compliance matters are properly addressed to ensure that the industry is successful and sustainable. The link to the report is in the comments. Many thanks to Matt Hughes for his insights on this. #CBPMs #MedicalCannabis #MedicinalCannabis #Cannabis #Compliance
