I was awarded a certificate for participation after I was part of the Oxford Geography Club. Although it was aimed at Year 10 and 11, I took part in this programme when I was in Year 9. As part of this club, we had some articles to read and videos to watch over the week, which we then discussed in the weekly online sessions. Covering a range of topics, from desertification to learning about ENSO, this programme developed my interest in current affairs, encouraging me to try and learn more about what is currently going on in our world. As this course was designed for GCSE and A-Level geography course, I found the topics difficult to understand, but this did not stop me from trying my best each week. I think it was great experience and I would surely participate if a similar course happened again. (Feb 2023)

🍃 Danny Dorling is a professor in the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. In 2020 he published “Slowdown: The End of the Great Acceleration—And Why It’s Good for the Planet, the Economy, and Our Lives”; and in 2021, jointly with Annika Koljonen: “Finntopia: What We Can Learn from the World’s Happiest Country”. He slowed down for a year in 2022, and his 2023 book was titled: “Shattered Nation: Inequality, and the Geography of a Failing State”. In 2024 he publishes two books: “Seven Children” and “Peak Injustice”. In his spare time, he makes sandcastles on beaches with clean streams and the right kind of sand. I have a new article out today. It explores how people think about #dataprivacy in relation to #fertility and #pregnancy tracking apps📱 👀 Open access in the journal New Media & Society. Through interviews with 24 women in the UK, I explore how they perceived their sharing of data with their apps as a transaction or payment in return for access to information about fertility, pregnancy and parenthood. I'm incredibly happy and proud to announce that I have graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Honours Degree in BA Geography! Learning from the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford over the past three years has been an invaluable experience, and I am very grateful for my tutors, lecturers, and supervisors who guided me through my degree. I am also incredibly lucky to have had the enriching opportunities of being JCR President and Freshers' Rep at Hertford College, University of Oxford, as well as being a part of the Athletics Club, Drama Society, and Pink Week Society. My time at Oxford has been nothing short of rewarding and ultimately unforgettable, and I am thankful for my friends and family who have supported me throughout my time here! 🌟

Research Associate in Nature Finance - Data and Analytics, Resilience and Development Group vacancy at Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. The researcher will be an important part of the Resilience and Development Group of the Environmental Change Institute and will be part of a team of researchers collaborating together across ECI and academic partner institutions to deliver the Greening Finance for Nature flagship of the UKRI Integrating Finance and Biodiversity (IFB) Programme. The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to and/or lead one or more defined projects within the IFB programme as well as across our wider research portfolio, e.g. the Resilient Planet Initiative, for example:   •           Working with banks, insurers, asset owners and asset managers to design metrics and frameworks to integrate nature into their business strategies and risk management frameworks and design new financial products to support resilience and nature.   •           Working with Central Banks and Ministries of Finance in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean to build financial resilience to nature-related risks and put in place sustainable finance frameworks to help steer capital away from activities that damage nature and mobilise investment in nature recovery.   •           Assessing current and designing new forms of analytics and metrics to measure the impact of investments on nature-related goals and measure the alignment of firms and financial flows with the Global Biodiversity Framework.   •           Contributing to our work on global systemic resilience, including learning from past nature-related shocks, building the next generation of predictive and exploratory models and working with governments to develop frameworks to manage risks.   •           Contributing to our global collaboration to develop open globally-consistent nature and climate risk analytics and tools as part of the Resilient Planet initiative. Very happy to share my latest article, which has been published online today in the journal of Geopolitics. It contributes to critical and popular geopolitics by exploring the production of BBC Radio 4’s journalism on Europe’s migration ‘crisis’ 📻 The paper answers calls for more ‘peopled’ accounts of geopolitics by presenting original interview material with journalists, producers and editors at the BBC who were at the forefront of broadcasting on forced migration and displacement. These firsthand testimonies are used to uncover the thought-processes, decision-making, and practices which shaped Radio 4’s diverse coverage; reveal how journalists understood their role and responsibility when witnessing and reporting on refugees; and elucidate the strategies of storytelling they deployed to try and capture audience attention and interest, spark their geographical imaginations, and engage their capacities to care. I argue that the journalists interviewed emerge as thoughtful and self-reflexive geopolitical ‘agents’ who are aware of their representational power and recognise the tensions between objective and impartial BBC reportage and critical issues of emotion, positionality, and situated knowledge. On Friday I spent a fascinating morning learning about the biodiversity and management of Long Mead Local Wildlife Site. With the vast majority of floodplain hay meadows now lost from the UK, Long Mead offers a glimpse of the extraordinary biodiversity and societal benefits of these rare habitats. Among the many botanical treasures I saw (and smelled) were rough hawkbit, great burnet, meadowsweet, lady's bedstraw, marsh bedstraw common knapweed, devil's-bit scabious, water-dropwort - together creating an astounding kaleidoscope of life and colour. Longmead is now working with a group of local farmers and landowners on the Thames Valley Wildflowers Meadow Restoration Project, with an aim to manage and restore floodplain meadows along the Thames. Seabirds can follow fishing boats for hours, making them at risk of bycatch; now, we can better estimate how long 🎣 If a bird is tracked and one location is recorded every two hours, how can we be sure where it flew in between? What are the chances that it approached a nearby fishing vessel, if that also has two-hour gaps between its GPS locations? Time geography can be used for any two tracked objects where there are these kinds of gaps - so could help us protect other animals too, from manatees at risk of boat strikes to deer at risk of vehicle collisions.
