Students at academically selective schools do no better in early adulthood than peers going to comprehensives, an Australian study found. 2. Leaders should map out 'hotspot' areas in school that make pupils feel unsafe in a bid to boost attendance, according to new research from ImpactEd Group. 3. Teachers receive 'minimal' training on writing, despite a strong appetite for further development across the primary and secondary phases, according to a report by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). This week's Director's View from Sam Derby... "Bridget Phillipson's first letter to the teaching workforce focuses on change, solutions and fixing existing problems, with a highlight on the promise to recruit more teachers and address weaknesses in the SEND system, alongside a recognition of financial pressures and workload problems. There has been nothing on curriculum and assessment yet, so a watching brief on the promised review continues. Meanwhile, job cuts at the IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) are presumably a prelude to the establishment of Skills England. Keep an eye on structural change at the DfE to see what actions come first in delivering the promised level of change." Subscribe to get tomorrow's research round-up: https://buff.ly/3X6gJny

This week's Director's View from John Deans... "With two days to the election, education stories are pushing into the news agenda again. The headlines this week are in the HE sector, but teacher and TA recruitment and retention will be an immediate challenge. If an open question is how big the new government's majority will be, another is what tone the Prime Minister strikes on Friday, and to what extent he presents a government focussed on the life chances of young people."
