One bit of advice I give every Data Consulting candidate who I help land an interview... Is that if you're interviewing for a role, and you do not know the answer to a specific technical question or have no experience relating to the question... Do not lie or try to make something up 🙄 Just tell the truth, you don't have to be perfect to get a role; you’d just look silly trying to think of something you have no answer to. ALTERNATIVELY Suppose this is a question where there is no right or wrong answer, which, in my words, is a more logical thinking question.  Then, show you working out and how you would get to answer and go into as much detail as possible on your thought process / what you need to consider to get to a conclusion. You Never Know Who’s Watching 👀 I've been on a mission to consistently post twice a week (excluding job adverts) for the past 10 months since launching ON Data Staffing My goal? To provide insights into the data consulting space from a Headhunter's perspective, not just the typical “save it for Facebook” type of posts. What I've discovered is that the effort pays off in unexpected ways. Cold calls and introductory meetings have become a bit warmer, with prospective clients and candidates mentioning they've seen my posts on LinkedIn. Although when I hear that my first thought is always, “Yeah, but you aren’t liking them, are ya?” 🙄 Anyways, what I'm saying is that consistency and effort matter. Even if you don't see immediate results, keep pushing. "Not actively looking but am open to hearing about a good opportunity." This is a line I hear all the time, and I love it! It’s a mindset that keeps doors open to exciting possibilities. In fact, about 70% of my placements this year have been candidates who weren't actively in the market but were willing to have a conversation with me 😜 It just goes to show that being open to a chat can lead to incredible opportunities. My definition of "Luck" is when preparation meets opportunity. There are a lot of posts on LI saying people are lucky enough to land themselves a new role. I don't believe they have been lucky in the traditional way people talk about it. I believe they where prepared enough to take the opportunity when it came. The data job market is more competitive than ever so preparation is key. Too many in the industry don't take things seriously enough. Many job applicants think their technical background alone will land them any role—wrong! In my experience, its the candidates who in advance go over their technical fundamentals again, research the role, ask relevant questions, learn from each interview, and apply that knowledge in the final stages who stand out. Maybe I'm wrong, but here's how the past year has looked when hiring for GenAI roles across Data Consulting: 🔄 The Cycle: Clients want to hire GenAI professionals but have no actual live projects, just a few SOWs. Candidates seek clients with live GenAI projects ready for hands-on work. Clients desire GenAI experts with actual project experience, not just SOW assistance. Candidates lack GenAI experience due to the absence of live projects. And so, the cycle continues... An insight I learned from the Databricks keynote, was that the vast majority of companies with a GenAI budget have no clear understanding of their expenditures and have seen ZERO ROI. This will undoubtedly change as more companies discover the synergy between Data & AI. 🗣 Companies need to understand that the Data market is a lot smaller than they think, one bad candidate experience can have a ripple effect on future applications. People speak, people network and nothing spreads faster than bad news❌ One company in particular was notoriously bad for lowballing candidates, so I stopped working with them and candidates in the niche stopped applying directly too. Being a Data Recruiter, I act as the middle man and the phrase don’t shoot the messenger often pops into my mind, so I try my absolute best to ensure a smooth ride for both client/candidate, even if one is being a pain in the.... 🤐 The majority of the time it's the candidate's frustration due to slow interview processes, not getting availability/feedback on time, or just poor offers after the client knows the candidate’s minimal expectations. In my opinion, to hire top talent in the Data market you need to have integrity, just do what you say you're going to do, cause more than likely you’ll cross paths again or a peer will cross paths and I’d imagine most people would want to be spoken of in high regard. I asked a candidate earlier what exactly they meant when they said “They’d like a role more Senior” They responded by saying that’s a good question & in 2 months of job search/speaking to recruiters no one had asked them that before. *That blew my mind 😨 * Such a simple but effective question. As headhunters/hiring managers, we must ask these types of questions to understand what our candidates are really looking for. Not to mention, simple questions like this help to find out candidate motivations and ensure that everyone is on the same page. We should never assume that just because someone wants a more “Senior” position, they are talking about a job title. Every role in different organizations has different responsibilities. Hiring people isn’t just about new titles or getting a gap filled, it's about how individuals can benefit from a new organization and what value they can bring along with them. #DataHeadhunter #DataRecruitment  ON Data Staffing
