We’re pleased to announce today that we’ve raised a further £150m from Avon Pension Fund, Pensions Gloucestershire Fund, Devon Pension Fund and Clwyd Pension Fund to help support them deliver affordable homes across the UK. It’s our goal to build new affordable, energy-efficient homes for those who need them most, which is very much in line with the Local Government Pension Funds’ ambition of driving positive societal and environmental impact in their local areas and beyond. About us
Octopus Investments, part of the Octopus Group, is an investment company investing in the people, ideas and industries that will change the world. We manage investments for retail and institutional investors, investing the £13.5* billion they have entrusted to us into the areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact. More than 85% of the money we manage is invested in line with one or more of our three investment themes: empowering people, revitalising healthcare and building a sustainable planet. Our retail investors and the financial advisers that support them, have many different goals, from supporting their families to lead better lives and effectively passing down wealth to protecting their money and directing it to places that need it. We provide a range of products that help them to achieve these aims, including Venture Capital Trusts, Enterprise Investment Schemes, Business Relief-qualifying investments and listed UK small and medium-sized company funds. We support our institutional investors to meet their investment mandates on behalf of their end investors, across five specialist asset classes: renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, real estate, healthcare and venture capital. Octopus Real Estate and Octopus Ventures are part of Octopus Investments. * Octopus as at 31 March 2024 Funds Under Management data includes undrawn commitments, funds under advisory mandates and funds monitored. We announced new research yesterday that revealed that only a third of financial advisers have a plan in place to tackle the Great Wealth Transfer. It also found that 52% of investors said that their financial adviser hadn’t engaged with the beneficiaries of their estate. Despite that 58% of investors think their beneficiaries would stay with their current adviser and that 79% said they’d recommend their adviser to their loved ones. See how this was covered in FTadviser: https://bit.ly/3Y0sdvj

Despite their many tax benefits, ISAs aren’t inheritance tax free. If your estate is above the tax-free nil-rate band allowance of £325,000, when the time comes to pass your ISA onto your beneficiaries it’s likely that they will have to pay 40% inheritance tax when they inherit it. This can come as a surprise to some people when they start planning for their estate. In the below article, we discuss one way that you can plan for your estate while leaving your ISA pot in place within the ISA wrapper. Please note that investments discussed in the article are higher risk than standard Stocks and Shares ISAs. The value of an investment, and any income from it, can fall as well as rise. You could get back less than you invest. Tax treatment on individual circumstances and may change in the future. https://bit.ly/3XhktEH

Financial advisers, your client making a Business Relief-qualifying investment is one way they can plan to leave more of their wealth to family members free from inheritance tax. BR-qualifying investments put investor capital at risk and not everyone will be suitable for this type of investment. Tax benefits are subject to personal circumstances, qualification criteria, and prevailing tax legislation, which may change. Octopus is incredibly proud of the partnership we’ve had with Thames21 over the last 3 years. We’ve achieved so much together, the impact of which will last well into the future!
Game-changing. Passionate. Authentic. Phenomenal. These are just some of the words we would use to describe our incredible 3-year #corporatepartnership with Octopus. A true partnership, where both organisations have learned from each other, challenged each other, and grown together, for the better. From #unrestrictedfunding to unrestricted support, from 1,000s of staff throwing themselves into hands-on #corporatevolunteering with glee and grit to enthusiastically providing us with over 30 types of expertise through #professionalvolunteering, we have been blown away by the impacts this has had on Thames21. This partnership has directly supported Thames21 to build its financial and operational resilience, its exceptional team, and its determination to be bolder and more brilliant for the benefit of water, nature and people. From all the Thames21 Team - present and future - THANK YOU Octopus!! You have been a truly amazing partner. 💚💙💚💙 Wishing you every success with your two new #charitypartners! 🎉

But for those that do have a liability, there are ways to plan for your estate to leave as much as possible to your loved ones when you pass away. In Jessica Franks’ latest Money Marketing column, she discusses how despite being in place for many years now, the residence nil-rate band still has an aura of “newness” about it. She comments that this likely stems from the fact that, compared to the nil-rate band, it feels complicated. While being a very welcome incremental inheritance tax allowance available to most estates, there are some details, complexities and pitfalls to be mindful of. It’s an area where advice feels especially valuable to most families.
