It’s almost Election Day in the UK. With this comes an incredible opportunity for a new government to expand and protect the future of the media sector. Here are 3 key areas where growth is necessary for news media (taken from the News Media Association's Manifesto): 1. Regulating AI. -> Publishers should have control of their content and their consent must be sought before content is used by AI/for the training of LLMs. -> Publishers must also be fairly compensated for our journalism. 2. Ensuring the BBC doesn’t crowd out publishers. -> Plurality in the news media industry is a key reason why millions in the UK continue to choose and trust publishers. -> Ofcom must scrutinise the scope of the BBC’s online news services to retain the choices available to the public when they decide what form and source of media they want to consume. 3. Preserving Press Freedom. -> Action to combat strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) is key to protecting the freedom of the press in the UK. -> Existing legislation such as the Defamation Act, Data Protection Act, and Human Rights Act must be reviewed to ensure we strike the right balance between our right to privacy and protecting the democratic function of the media.
