The newcleo team was delighted to participate in a very encouraging inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels this week (#NES2024), jointly hosted by the Belgian federal government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).     🌍 It was hugely inspiring to see leaders from 32 countries demonstrate their commitment to work together on financing, technological innovation, regulatory cooperation, and workforce training – all measures that will help increase nuclear capacity, strengthen energy security, and tackle climate change.   💭The dynamic dialogue on the key role of SMRs continued today, where our CEO, Stefano Buono, joined NAAREA CEO Jean-Luc ALEXANDRE in a round table to highlight the positive signals of a growing market appetite for investment in new nuclear technologies.   This has been a welcome opportunity to connect with fellow innovators, and we look forward to sharing further insights on the new nuclear renaissance in the coming months.    #NES2024 #europeancommission #nuclear #nuclearenergy #SMRS

Following our announcement last month, we are delighted to officially welcome Ruggero Corrias as our Chief Government and International Affairs Officer. Ruggero will also take on the role as interim Group Communications Officer, continuing the work done by Laura Vergani and the newcleo Comms team on positioning newcleo as a key actor in the sector. We would like to thank Laura for her invaluable contribution since 2021 and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours. 🎙️Fabio Moretti, newcleo’s R&D Thermal Hydraulics Head of Unit, shared his insights on the needs of the Gen-IV community during the first GIF industry webinar, moderated by Mariano Tarantino. 💡 Fabio focused on our growth since our incorporation in 2021 and how newcleo addresses specific R&D needs through the refurbishment of existing ENEA infrastructure and several new state-of-the-art test facilities (e.g. CAPSULE, CORE, OTHELLO, DCI, MANUT). ⚛️ This year’s ENSREG European Nuclear Safety Conference on nuclear licensing and regulation, organised by the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration and in cooperation with the European Commission Directorate General for Energy, focused on “Responding to the growing interest in nuclear energy” from the regulatory bodies’ perspective. 💡 SMRs are taking centre stage, in an encouraging step forward in developing licensing frameworks in preparation for technology deployment. This indicates a strong international will to coordinate SMR licensing processes on an EU level, which will accelerate creation and implementation of best practices. 🇮🇹 It was very inspiring to hear Pichetto Fratin, the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, at Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition, where he confirmed the significant role nuclear can play in the decarbonisation of the energy mix.   💡 His visit to GET follows the submission by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport of the definitive text of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan to the European Commission (PNIEC).    ⚛️ The PNIEC highlights how nuclear fission could provide approximately 11% of the total electricity required by 2050 – with a possible projection towards 22%. Nuclear would help achieve the decarbonisation objectives at an estimated cost of approximately €17 billion lower than the cost of the “without nuclear” scenario. The PNIEC also endorses the economic competitiveness of SMRs and AMRs, and Minister Pichetto Fratin was able to see for himself newcleo’s own reactor on display at our stand.   #GETcongress #Decarbonisation #NetZero #NewNuclear #newcleo #SMRs

📆 On 26 June 2024, we completed the "preparatory phase" established by the French Nuclear Safety Authority (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire (ASN)) and the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) for small modular reactor project developers to facilitate, secure, and accelerate the processing of associated authorisation requests.  ✅ This year-long phase allowed for the verification by dozens of experts of the overall maturity of our reactor project and our associated pilot fuel line. 💬 Stéphane Calpena, our Global Licensing Director, stated: “We are all thrilled that our project has reached this key milestone in the rigorous process leading newcleo to obtain the required authorisations for the launch of this new sustainable nuclear sector.
