✅ The National Shipbuilding Office were visiting BAE Systems in Govan last week. 🤝 The team were updated on progress of the #Type26 programme and BAE Systems Maritime significant recent investment in facilities. The NSO and BAE Systems continued to build on a close relationship between teams as they discussed the challenges and opportunities currently facing the enterprise. ℹ BAE Systems Maritime is the largest #shipbuilding company in the UK, one of the largest in Europe, and one of the world's largest builders of complex warships. They employee around 4,500 people, plus a further 1,000 contractors, across its two sites on the Clyde and a further five locations in the South of England. 👉 The Type 26 programme is the most advanced and complex #warship ever built in the UK. BAE Systems Maritime is making significant progress on the build of the first four Type 26 frigates for the Royal Navy. The contract sustains more than 4,000 jobs across BAE Systems and the wider UK maritime #supplychain. Up to £1.8bn of the new order will be spent in the supply chain, including £1.2bn with UK suppliers. 💸 The Government’s commitment to UK Shipbuilding through the Refreshed National Shipbuilding Strategy and shipbuilding pipeline has allowed industry to invest for the future. 👏 Rex Cox and the National Shipbuilding Office are delighted to congratulate Paul Sheerin on becoming chair of the newly launched shipbuilding Skills Delivery Group, announced yesterday by Grant Shapps in his role as Shipbuilding Tsar. 👉 The shipbuilding Skills Delivery Group will drive the delivery of the UK Shipbuilding Skills Taskforce recommendations and will be a champion for #skills within the UK Shipbuilding Enterprise 📢 Paul Sheerin "I have observed first-hand the impact of a skills gap on the productivity, levels of innovation and competitiveness of a sector, and can see the positive impact a linked-up government and industry approach can have on addressing that gap. "It is critical for the UK shipbuilding enterprise that the skills gap is addressed, and to ensure that this can happen there needs to be a unified approach across different skills systems, across different parts of the enterprise and across government and the devolved administrations. My aim is that the shipbuilding Skills Delivery Group (SDG) can play that vital role of unifying an approach to skills across the enterprise. "The UK Shipbuilding Skills Taskforce Report led by Paul Little was the first step in achieving the longer-term aim of reducing the skills shortage in the sector. The shipbuilding Skills Delivery Group will continue to be the champion for skills across the whole enterprise, focussing on delivering on the intent of the UKSST Report with tangible outcomes that bring new talent to the sector whilst retaining and up-skilling existing talent. "I am extremely excited and proud to chair the SDG, working alongside a highly knowledgeable and experienced membership comprised of representatives from across the whole enterprise. With the continued support of the Shipbuilding Tsar Grant Shapps and the National Shipbuilding Office, I look forward to working with the Group to deliver a positive impact on skills within this vital sector to the UK."
