🚇 How do you excavate a world beating #tunnel from both sides of a river with precision accuracy but without computers or modern technology? 🎙️ Uncover how our innovative predecessors achieved this amazing feat in our latest #heritage podcast with Engineering Matters. We delve into the story behind the construction of the incredible Queensway Tunnel and its impact on the #tunnelling industry on its 90th anniversary. 👇 https://mottm.ac/4bUjQo9 In the 1930s, some of our best engineers accepted the challenge to build the huge circular road #tunnel beneath the River Mersey, which spans 13.4m in diameter and runs for 3.4km to connect Liverpool and Birkenhead, UK. The sheer size of the #QueenswayTunnel made it the largest subaqueous tunnel in the world at that time and the country’s largest ever municipal #engineering project. Its opening was so successful on 18 July 1934, that three decades later the city decided to build another and its sister, the Kingsway Tunnel, opened in 1971. These innovative contributions set new global standards for tunnel structures, enabling us to deliver critical connections between people and places today. Ninety years on, we’re proud to support Merseytravel with operations and maintenance of the tunnels to ensure they perform well into the future. #ThenNowTomorrow #CivilEngineering Images courtesy of Merseytravel

We're proud to have supported the outline planning application for Edgware Town Centre – a transformative masterplan that brings extensive new opportunity to this north London community. Driven by our client Ballymore, in partnership with Places for London, the proposed development will bring forward over 3,000 homes, many of which will be affordable - as well as more than doubling the existing commercial, retail, leisure and community facilities on the site. #ActiveTravel will be promoted throughout the scheme, with access opened up to green space that has been closed off to the public for almost 100 years. Plus, a new transport hub will be delivered, future-proofed to support a #ZeroEmissions London bus fleet. We have provided multi-disciplinary engineering services including civil and structural, transport planning, strategic sustainability services, and fire engineering. We’ve been pleased to collaborate with partners across the industry including Howells Gustafson Porter + Bowman Field Consulting UK Hoare Lea Ashurst Hutchinson & Partners Gardiner & Theobald LLP Trium Environmental Consulting LLP Delva Patman Redler LLP Quod

The #KingsSpeech at the State Opening of Parliament today set out the plans and policies to be brought forward by the new Labour government. Richard Risdon, our managing director for UK and Europe, has responded to the proposals on investment in #infrastructure in the King’s Speech: “Since the election it has been encouraging to see the pace at which the new government is starting to put its manifesto commitments into action. The King’s Speech adds to the momentum by setting out the legislative agenda for the next few months, which is critical for both us and our clients." https://mottm.ac/4668qN3

The full and final report published by the London Climate Resilience Review continues to call for urgent action to prepare the capital, and cities across the UK, for more frequent and intense climate impacts 👇 https://mottm.ac/46aOVCP We were pleased to contribute to the report, which provides an assessment of London's climate resilience and makes 50 recommendations calling for strategic, delivery, capacity building or investment actions to guide the preparations that need to be undertaken. Professor Denise Bower OBE, our group external engagement director, says "The message is clear: if we want to build resilience and allow all communities to flourish then urgent action is needed. This requires a multi-layered approach with the right leadership and governance at the national and regional levels, collaboration between the public and private sectors to deliver the investment required, embedding risk and resilience into strategic decision-making on our infrastructure and buildings, and supporting Londoners in knowing what to expect and what to do." Things are taking shape in Birmingham as we celebrate the completion of four huge piers for the 150-metre-long #HS2 superstructure, the Bellingham Bridge. 🎉 Taking its nickname from England footballer, Jude Bellingham, the bridge design celebrates the area’s industrial heritage. It will carry high-speed trains over the existing Victorian brick rail viaduct, with a 25-metre-high curved truss displaying a vibrant light installation. We’re delighted to mark this significant milestone in the construction of the one-mile sequence of #viaducts that will take high-speed trains in and out of Birmingham, with our client HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, Balfour Beatty VINCI and our design joint venture partners, SYSTRA. 🎥 by HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd Read more, here. 👇 https://mottm.ac/4cWX0xf SYSTRA UK & Ireland #HighSpeedRail

🎧 Travel back to 1934 as we prepare to share the story of the Queensway Tunnel in the next episode of our #heritage podcast series with Engineering Matters. 🚇 #ThenNowTomorrow Dreams of building a subaqueous crossing beneath the River Mersey to connect Liverpool and Birkenhead, UK, began in the late 1800s. It wasn't until the next century that the most experienced and respected #engineers were called to explore the possibilities. Among them was Sir Basil Mott. The #QueenswayTunnel project set a new standard for #tunnel design and construction. It was so difficult that King George V declared it a miracle when he opened it 90 years ago on 18 July 1934. The engineers lacked the wealth of ground information that we have now. This meant they had to investigate from within the tunnel to address major challenges, such as loose ground and fractured rock, which posed the risk of collapse and flooding of the tunnel. The ingenuity of these engineers laid the groundwork for projects delivered by our industry today. We've applied many of their pioneering innovations into designs for rock #tunnels all over the world ever since - from Istanbul, Türkiye to Ohio, USA. Join us on 18 July to discover more as we celebrate the 90th anniversary of this outstanding accomplishment in technical innovation! Images courtesy of Merseytravel

At Mott MacDonald, we recognise that urgent action is needed by the infrastructure industry to put nature on the same footing as carbon reduction. The need for fast paced change now comes from the opportunity for nature to support decarbonisation of infrastructure developments. 🌿 "Nature: the missing piece of the net zero puzzle," the latest report from Net-Zero Infrastructure Industry Coalition (NZIIC), illustrates why enhancing nature and reducing carbon emissions must be considered together. This report is the first from the NZIIC to place emphasis firmly on enhancing nature alongside decarbonisation for infrastructure developments. 🏗️ This latest publication from the NZIIC, founded by Mott MacDonald, underscores the urgency of this dual approach. By considering the carbon sequestration capabilities of nature, we can avoid unintended consequences and achieve holistic environmental benefits. 📖 Read the full report here: https://mottm.ac/4cyNFMt #Sustainability #Nature #NetZero #Infrastructure #environment #NZIIC
