London's Metropolitan Police Service | New Scotland Yard

About us

The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. Our headquarters at New Scotland Yard - and its iconic revolving sign - has provided the backdrop to some of the most high profile and complex law enforcement investigations the world has ever seen. Founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, the original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million. Today, The Met employs 32,000 officers together with specialist support staff and more than 2,500 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. As well as policing London’s 620 square miles and 8.9million population, The Met has national responsibility for a variety of specialist policing units and hosts the UK’s Counter Terrorism Policing HQ. The Met is one of the largest employers in London and with a broad range of roles, from neighbourhoods to firearms. We’re recruiting people who want to make a difference, to help people and begin a career in a brilliant organisation, performing an exciting and extremely rewarding role. Today, now more than ever, is the time to join the Met. www.met.police.uk/careers

Off-duty officer praised after he chased and detained a suspect A 16-year-old boy is currently in custody in connection with an attempted murder in Shoebury, Essex in May. Officers were called to Southend High Street at around 7pm on Friday 28 June following reports of a fight involving a group of boys. Prior to Essex Police arriving and following information that a boy in the group may be in possession of a knife, an off-duty Met officer pursued the boy on foot and managed to detain him. When Essex Police officers arrived, the 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and possession of a class B or C drug. He was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, in connection with a serious assault Chapel Road in Shoebury on 19 May. Searches in a nearby bin also resulted in a recovery of a knife. District Commander for Southend, Chief Inspector Jo Collins said “I would like to commend the actions of the off duty Metropolitan Police Officer, who ran towards an individual suspected of holding a knife in order to protect the safety of the wider public. “This bravery is admirable and demonstrates the courage that police officers across the country show every day. #CommunityCrimeFighting

PCSO Adriana Ciser was out on patrol in Victoria Park when she was approached by two members of the public who were concerned about a man shouting and threatening to harm himself and others. Without hesitation, she ran over to the man who she could see was making his way towards the canal. He appeared to be searching for someone to push into the canal so Adriana knew she had to act. On seeing her, the man fled but Adriana was close behind. He headed towards the main road and into oncoming traffic. She shouted at the man to stay where he was, whilst calling for further assistance. Whilst waiting for her colleagues to arrive, Adriana solely stopped the traffic in both directions and kept the man talking, so to prevent him from coming to any harm. Thanks to PCSO Ciser's rapid response, the man received the support he needed. Without her actions, the outcome could have been completely different. If you or someone you know is having a difficult time, talk to someone. Call the Samaritans any time, from any phone, on 116 123

Photos of aspiring police officers that might 'arrest' you. Officers and staff from across the Met came together last month to shape positive perceptions of the police with some of London's youngest residents. Working with Enchanted Land Day Nursery in Brent, the officers organised a day the children would not forget. They had a chance to speak to the officers, explore their gear, see the blue lights in action, and even sit in the driver's seat. The nursery have recently been discussing the important roles of the emergency services, and their latest focus is on the police and the role they play in keeping communities safe from 'baddies'. Not every child may feel comfortable when they first see a police officer and events like this will help put them at ease and build healthier relationships. Each child experienced being a police officer for the day and went home with their very own police car and a colouring book. Their fun doesn't stop there as the nursery are expecting the London Fire Brigade later this month.

Jackie shares a poignant tribute to her son Tyrese, who was shot dead in Mitcham last year when he was on his way home from an evening out with friends - she has a powerful message to anyone considering picking up a firearm: "Think of the effect not just on the victim's family, but on your family. Believe me, your family will suffer as well." There is no place for firearms on the streets of London - every single death or injury is a tragedy, leaving victims and their families with life changing effects.
