We were proud to take part in another productive meeting of the Malaria Chemoprevention Research and Policy Uptake Task Team (NPRPUT) on 8 and 9 July in #Nigeria. We met with partners including the Federal Ministry of Health, National Malaria Elimination Programme and Osun State Ministry of Health to present interim results from our PMC Effect study. Perennial malaria chemoprevention (#PMC) can provide protection against malaria for children in areas with year-round malaria transmission. We’re generating evidence needed to support the uptake of PMC into the national health policy, taking steps towards more impactful malaria control efforts. ❌🦟
Official handle of the Honorable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Federal Republic of Nigeria
I was delighted to deliver the keynote address at the Third National Perennial #Malaria Chemoprevention (PMC) Research and Policy Uptake Task Team (NPRPUT) Meeting. #Nigeria continues to occupy the unenviable position of having the highest malaria burden, accounting for 27% of total cases and 31% of deaths respectively (World Malaria Report 2023). Therefore, it is imperative that we effectively utilize the data gathered in the PMC study to make informed decisions on future PMC policy adoptions and ensure that the deployed interventions complement other malaria control efforts. At the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, we are unwavering in our commitment to eliminating malaria, as demonstrated through the current National Malaria Strategic Plan 2021–2025. I am confident that the collective wisdom, expertise, and dedication present yesterday will pave the way for impactful PMC interventions and help us achieve Mr. President’s and our shared mission to improve public health. I extend my thanks to our funding and implementing partners, including the World Health Organization, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Malaria Consortium, as well as to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the Department of Health Planning Research and Statistics, the State Malaria Elimination Programmes (SMEPs), and the State Primary Health Development Agency (SPHCDA). I also want to acknowledge the efforts of all health workers at the service delivery points who work tirelessly in collaboration with the study team.

Using existing structures to deliver multiple health services can be an effective way to make #healthcare go further, achieving greater impact — such as how, in #Nigeria, we are supporting the use of seasonal malaria chemoprevention to co-deliver vitamin A supplementation to children. GiveWell's insightful blog looks at what it means to combine health programmes effectively. #SMC #GlobalHealth

#Mozambique is one of six countries that contribute to more than half of all global #malaria cases. Effective #surveillance is crucial for monitoring the disease burden, identifying outbreaks, and making data-driven decisions to control and eliminate malaria. Without strong surveillance systems, Mozambique's efforts to combat malaria are severely hampered, potentially leading to continued high rates of malaria transmission and inadequate responses to outbreaks. Discover how our project with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., Goodbye Malaria, CISM- Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça, Mozambique's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization improved data quality, motivated 👩🏾⚕️ health workers, and strengthened outbreak response.
