Make the Label Count :"Sustainability has become a priority objective for the European Union (EU).The global supply of textiles has been recognized by the EU as a major source of emissions and resource use. Our analysis has identified the main challenges the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) system poses to an equal comparison of products made from natural and synthetic fibres, and presents pragmatic recommendations to better align the methodology with the EU’s Green Deal and circular economy objectives: 1- The PEF system must include impacts from microplastics to be consistent with EU expectations, strategies and communications, and to follow the precautionary principle. 2- The PEF system must include a plastic waste indicator to be consistent with EU directives on plastic waste. 3- The PEF system must include a circularity indicator to be consistent with the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP)." #makethelabelcount #internationalwool #naturalfibers #plasticwaste

The EU's proposed Green Claims Directive, aiming to curb greenwashing, has sparked concern among more than 500,000 farmers worldwide who argue that it unfairly favours synthetic fibres. Vogue Business recently published an article highlighting these concerns, and the need to find a balanced methodology for assessing environmental impact that includes the perspectives of all stakeholders to ensure true sustainability. Even among critics, it is broadly agreed that PEF is the best methodology that currently exists — but there is considerable room for improvement. As stated by Crispin Argento, MTLC Coalition member and global managing director of cotton transparency startup Sourcery, “It’s not about taking down the PEF. It’s actually about taking ownership of reporting.” Read the article here: https://ow.ly/fN1i50SmWas?

Wonderful to see an array of tartan and tweeds take the catwalk at Drummond Castle in Scotland for the Dior Cruise 2025 show last week. Maria Grazia Chiuri has been collaborating with some Scottish based makers including Scottish Designer Samantha McCoach of Le kilt, who created some beautiful tweed kilts for the Dior X Le Kilt collection. This tweed cloth was woven by Lochcarron of Scotland at our mill in the Scottish Borders. It was an absolute pleasure to have the Dior team down to film at our mill and we are very pleased to have been involved in manufacturing fabric featured in an incredible Dior show set in Scotland. It was an incredible evening yesterday, thank you to the Borders Book Festival for organising such an inspiring event and to Patrick Grant for a fascinating talk about consumerism and the importance of re-introducing British manufacturing skills, which he discusses in his new book, ‘Less’. It is clear to see how passionate he is about British textiles. As a manufacturer here in Scotland, crafting quality tartan textiles, we were very proud to have sponsored this event. Before his event at the Border’s Book Festival, Lochcarron of Scotland also enjoyed meeting and gifting Patrick Grant with some of our cloth. Sir Michael Grant of Grant, Lord Strathspey, 34th Chief of Grant presented him with a kilt length of the Grant 1714 tartan. This historical tartan was recently reconstructed by Peter Macdonald, tartan historian, and honorary Head of Research at The Scottish Tartan’s Authority from studies of Richard Waitt’s portraits of the Laird of Grant’s Piper and Champion from 1714. It is one of the earliest tartans on record and is believed to be the only historic early 18th century tartan to have been re-created and registered by a Clan Chief, woven at our mill in the Scottish Borders. With Patrick Grant's Scottish roots, we felt this would be a fitting gift. At Lochcarron of Scotland we were also delighted to gift Patrick Grant some of our new Yair herringbone tweed jacket cloth. Made with sustainable consciousness the cloth is woven using 50% Scottish wool, 25% new pure wool and 25% recycled wool. The recycled wool is formed from our waste wool - scarf selvedges and loom lists from tartan weaving. Working with our partners, iinouiio: Recycled Textiles in Yorkshire, our wool waste is shredded to be recycled for us. It is mixed with new wool and spun into yarn before returning to our Selkirk mill to be woven into this new Yair tweed cloth. Re-using our previously discarded wool allows us to reduce our wool wastage, give it a new lease of life and contribute to the circular economy.
